OK kids, so this here is the part of the Venn diagram where the big red LWM circle overlaps the little green RRT circle, forming a brownish, non-symmetric lens of maximum difficulty. Now, while circle RRT is of a fixed and known size, the exact circumference of circle LWM is somewhat hypothetical. Conceivably, the overlap could transform into a full circle as RRT becomes entirely engulfed by LWM. Pity the thought, because the Spurs have certainly struggled away from home this season, and this month's road odyssey is by no means a cakewalk. Of the nine games, six are against very tough opponents. If there were ever a point in the season that it would be ideal for Manu Ginobili to return, this would probably be it. Are the Spurs ready to do this thing without him?

Well, ask Tony Parker if he is ready. Ask Tim Duncan. Ask Kawhi Leonard. Yeah, these guys are ready to give it their best shot, no holds barred. That light at the end of the tunnel, however long the tunnel may be, is a locomotive called Manu, but his teammates aren't waiting idly for his arrival. Parker and Duncan have been sharing the Atlas duties lately and their deep but green cadre of teammates have started to get the hang of things and are playing with a lot of fire and improving execution. As fun as last season was, this season is shaping up into something even more interesting. After a crazy December and January, the always difficult Rodeo Road Trip ironically begins a period of relative normalcy, and it begins tonight in Memphis.

The Grizzlies have had the injury bug this season and are sitting at .500, bearing little resemblance to the team that finished last season with such promise. We hosted these guys only a week ago, and are quite familiar with the Grizz. Hulk tossed him a few bears in that one, but we know the Grizzlies are tougher at home and, well, just tough in general. Memphis only broke the 20 point mark in one quarter in that game. They again had trouble scoring in Boston yesterday. But I expect them to be better at home where they are 7-3, and the Spurs are going to have to continue their improved recent play to get a win.
At one point not long ago Memphis had a seven game winning streak going, but they have now dropped six of their last eight and are struggling. Already thin with the injuries to Zach Randolph and Darrell Arthur, Memphis was also without the rough and tumble services of Tony Allen yesterday due to leg problems that may keep him out of tonight's game, forcing coach Lionel Hollins to use the same makeshift starting lineup you see below. They are playing the second game of a back-to-back, which may further test their depth issues. Rudy Gay is the team's leading scorer with 18.3 per game this season, but Gasol, Allen, Mayo and Conley are all averaging in the double figures and will need to be contained. Currently Memphis is near the bottom third of the league in scoring with just under 94 per contest, and their point differential is +1.7. Memphis is shooting poorly from the three point line, and they are mediocre at defending same, so this is one facet of the game I would keep an eye on. Memphis is a good defensive squad, holding opponents to just 92 points and 43.5% shooting per game. They lead the league in causing opponents to turn the ball over at 18 per game, and this is one area in which the Spurs are going to have to remain solid; with their set offense struggling, the Grizzlies would like nothing more than to convert some easy baskets off of turnovers.
Have the Spurs gotten over last year's unceremonious dismissal at the claws of these Grizzlies? I wouldn't bet on it. Parker, Duncan and company are playing focused, inspired ball lately, and I expect more of the same tonight. And if Tony Parker has a little chip on his wee French shoulders, Mike Conley just may be in for a little payback tonight. He outplayed Parker in the playoffs last season, but not many are outplaying Tony right now. Then again, the Grizzlies are at home, are hungry for a win, and would love to get a new winning streak started. This should be a good one to watch.

NBA Stats Cube Lineup Comparison Here. Grizzlies perspective can be found at Straight Outta Vancouver.
Game Predictions: Kawhi Leonard will frustrate Rudy Gay into an inefficient and forgettable performance; Tony Parker will continue his exuberance in the lane, creating lots of open looks for his teammates; Tim Duncan will school the Big Gasolski; Mayo and Conley will keep it close; Spurs win by 7.
As always Tony must dominate Fisher, and NBA league pass is recommended for those who are willing to pony up the cash. Almost every Spurs game will be broadcast there, which is especially helpful for those of us who aren't in the San Antonio area. Please don't post links to illegal game feeds in the game thread. Links to illegal feeds are not permitted on SBNation, but you can probably find them out there on the internets if you're resourceful and desperate.

Let’s do this thing.
Nice.
Bakkie009 - February 6, 2012
I hope Kawhi continues to shoot as well as he did in the previous game. Tiago should see more minutes matching up with Gasol. We need to see if he will be able to cover him with single coverage and without getting into foul trouble. They’re still a potential playoff matchup for us… this experience for Tiago will be very valuable down the road. Green should also see some minutes matching up with Gay. There might be times when Kawhi’s defense won’t be able to compensate for the deficiency that could be brought about if he’s struggling on the opposite end of the floor.
Reylan - February 6, 2012
I hope Kawhi plays Gay like he did last time. That was total domination.

Doubt it. Realistically, it’s going to not be reliable this season, even if it improves with Chip.
grego21 - February 6, 2012
one thing I noticed in the previous match up against the Griz was the Spurs’ focus on locking up the paint. A great idea against a poor shooting team, however, given the Spurs’ bad luck this season, teams just seem to be making those shots.
I noticed Parker slacking off of Conley too much, leaving him too much space for the 3. From the 2 games we’ve played against them, Conley is 3-4 from behind the arc. Blair was also slacking off of his man too much, Spleights had 10 in the previous game against them (Randolph played in the 1st game), and most of those points seemed to come from open midrange jumpers.
Yes, I know it sounds that I’m nitpicking, but these are things easily adjusted. With Gasol and Gay the only ones capable of scoring in the paint, locking down on the other guys seems like a good option as well. I just hope the Spurs’ D is still sharp. Go Spurs!

It’s a good point, and I’m sure Pop and the other coaches are aware of it. One thing about basketball is that you want to take away a teams strengths and force them to beat you with something that they’re not as good at. Memphis is ridiculous in the paint and very below average at shooting the 3. I wouldn’t be surprised if we see the same strategy deployed tonight just based on the numbers and odds that it will work again.

Yowsa ..Yoda.

Thanks. Love photoshop, I do.

Of course, Parker has the girl all over him.

Gilbert Arenas to work out for LA
bigtee34 - February 6, 2012
Should read in LA, the tweet was misleading I found the article on NBA rumor central.

bigtee34 - February 6, 2012
That’s a move that could either help them, or destroy the fragile balance the Lakers have been in for about a year now.
Tim C. - February 6, 2012
I’d like to see him making bets with Kobe. That would be interesting.
Big50 - February 6, 2012
Or neither. He probably signs for the league minimum. At the first sign of trouble they can cut him.
Edg5 - February 6, 2012
Dr. Allen better play, too.
SleepCrack - February 6, 2012 via mobile
Dr. Allen, Dr. Allen, paging Dr. Allen. We have an arm injury in Ward 2 that needs to be diagnosed.
Joe deLarios - February 6, 2012
Nice work Q. I’m amped up for this RRT. I think our boys are playing their best defense in years and have a chance to do real damage in the standings. Getting Manu back will do nothing but improve our team (Capt. Obvious checking in). Let’s roll thru the next few weeks!
Big50 - February 6, 2012
Let’s get RRT12 started off right!
Trey Felder - February 6, 2012
I still dont understand...
How a professional basketball team, a large reason why anyone outside of Texas has even heard of San Antonio (the alamo not withstanding), gets the boot for two weeks every year for a rodeo!?
This has always surprised me, I guess I dont see the appeal of a rodeo, but thats neither here nor there, but cant they just use the Alamo Dome?
bren - February 6, 2012
Most teams (even the Lakers) get booted out for some amount of time. The Bulls have a “circus” trip where the circus takes the stadium. The Lakers have the awards shows (Emmys I think).
Josh Guyer (completely deck) - February 6, 2012
Right, but the emmys surely dont take two weeks
bren - February 6, 2012
Both the Lakers & Clips are on the road because of the Grammy Awards held yearly in Staples. They have to set-up the arena, then give them a week+ for rehearsals, then the show itself, etc. That takes close to a couple of weeks.
lazNirv - February 6, 2012
Well, the rodeo is a big part of San Antonio. When the proposal was made to finance this stadium with local tax dollars, this was part of the deal. The arena was built in an area of town that needed an economic boost, and it gave the rodeo a more permenant and modern home.
quincyscott - February 6, 2012 via mobile
This. When you get the city to pay for your arena you are subject to what the city wants.

Oh look! An American spinoff from a Korean classic!
Jordan Leithart - February 6, 2012
haha. Good one!
Ayatollah - February 6, 2012
Good preview Q. I expect Gay and Gasol to play better than they did last time. Containing their role players and daring them to beat us from mid-range will be key.
Edg5 - February 6, 2012
Rudy Gay will be out to punish Kawhi for holding him to one point last game. I think Kawhi’s up for it.
SleepCrack - February 6, 2012
You can only do so much. Gay will punish him for 20+ points. The amount of shots he’ll take is another story.
grego21 - February 6, 2012
The chances of the Grisslies repeating their poor shooting performance against the Spurs last time is slim….expect a closer game, especially if Leonard does not shut down Gay like he did last time
Joe deLarios - February 6, 2012
Which will not happen. It’ll be tougher than against most defenders, but Gay and Gasol, being off made life a tad easier. Got to play the odds on this one.
grego21 - February 6, 2012
yep, which means a much tougher game
Joe deLarios - February 6, 2012
I bet Allen is out tonight and Spurs win by 14.
Spurs Yoda - February 6, 2012
Spurs by 14 sounds good, but it’s just not as much fun beating the Grizz without Allen on the court.
SleepCrack - February 6, 2012
I’ll take any W on the road……and to start the road trip strong.
Spurs Yoda - February 6, 2012
100%. I’ll just do mean things to my Tony Allen voodoo doll if he’s not in the lineup.
SleepCrack - February 6, 2012
OK it’s time to shift out of the Tim gear into moving motion overdrive. Let em roll fast and hard Pop.
indiancharlie - February 6, 2012
I would like to see Tiago bounce back tonight offensively. Im willing to wager that he does.
Spurs Yoda - February 6, 2012
this rode trip will be great for the young guys like splitter,Kawhi, and green and even better by the end of this trip we should have back our best player and backup pointguard. I hope we keep the defense up weve playing much better defense not great but it is imporving and I hope it counites to do so
Manu-20 - February 6, 2012
The Spurs need to at least have a winning record on this RRT, so as long as they go 5-4, I think they’ll be fine. But I’m expecting they’ll go at least 6-3 on this trip.
Go Spurs Go!!!
Marky G - February 6, 2012
The grizz are withouth Tony Allen? Damn…..they are in real trouble. Speights (their starting PF) has been absolute garbage (I know this better than anyone, got him in fantasy basketball) and their bench consists of OJ mayo streakiness and that’s it. They need a herculean effort from Marc and Rudy to even have a chance against any team.
