While we’re on the subject, it seems to me that the central complaint about Manu is misplaced. He’ s not flopping at fouls that aren’t fouls; he’s dramatically “over-reacting” to actual fouls to call the refs’ attention to it. It’s a soccer technique that may be obnoxious, but it’s certainly not cheating.
I’ve always felt that this was the case, and I’ve always blamed the refs for players flopping. The only reason players (like Manu) flop so much is because it helps their team. The refs call the foul. If the refs didn’t call it, players would flop less. So even though it’s frustrating for the opponents to watch, it’s the smart play because it makes the refs react.
I’m not sold that is related to soccer. International players are used to playing organized ball for most of their lives. Getting calls becomes more important part of their games. Also, flopping is not perceived as a not-masculine act.

While we’re on the subject, it seems to me that the central complaint about Manu is misplaced. He’ s not flopping at fouls that aren’t fouls; he’s dramatically “over-reacting” to actual fouls to call the refs’ attention to it. It’s a soccer technique that may be obnoxious, but it’s certainly not cheating.

I’ve always felt that this was the case, and I’ve always blamed the refs for players flopping. The only reason players (like Manu) flop so much is because it helps their team. The refs call the foul. If the refs didn’t call it, players would flop less. So even though it’s frustrating for the opponents to watch, it’s the smart play because it makes the refs react.

I’m not sold that is related to soccer. International players are used to playing organized ball for most of their lives. Getting calls becomes more important part of their games. Also, flopping is not perceived as a not-masculine act.
