Well it was oh so nice for the NBA schedulers to give the Spurs a night off, don't you think? It must have felt like a mini vacation. I hope the boys in black got their beauty sleep, because tonight begins a pretty challenging weekend, hosting the Nuggets tonight and then visiting the Thunder less than twenty-four hours later. These are definitely the two toughest games of the LWM so far. Should be loads of fun. Let's get to it, shall we?

The Nuggets are finishing their own back-to-back, having played in NOLA last night. Denver is off to a strong start, picking up where they left off last season after the Knicks trade. As we all know, they gave up Carmelo Anthony and Chauncey Billups after what seemed like a months-long soap opera of doubt, but the cupboard is far from bare, and Denver has been playing really good ball since then. They were a tough opponent indeed for the Spurs after that February trade, playing with a lot of skill, hunger and hustle. I guess that whole "addition by subtraction" cliche is sometimes true after all. Good for them. Sure, for selfish reasons I would have liked to see Carmelo stay in a Nuggets jersey, but only because it would give Manu at least four times a season to potentially draw a game-winning charge on him. Sigh. Come back soon, Manu.

In this young season, the Nuggets are sitting pretty with the second highest scoring team in the league. And they are sharing the wealth, too, with six different players averaging double figures in scoring. As of this writing, they rank 6th in assists, more evidence of a team that is both unselfish and prolific on offense. They are getting to the line, ranking third in the league in free throw attempts. The Nuggets have a formidable front court, with Nene, Al Harrington, and the Illustrated Man himself, Chris Andersen, all contributing length and points. Added to the mix is Timofey Mozgov, a seven footer that they acquired in that Knicks trade. He was kind of an afterthought in the trade, but he is currently their starter, and although he doesn't get huge minutes, he can block shots and rebound. Denver has length and depth that will definitely challenge the Spurs. Maybe we get to see a little more playing time for Ike Diogu tonight to bolster our bigs, who admittedly are playing bigger this season. Timmy hasn't found his shot with any consistency yet, but that will come, and he is showing some great defense. Meanwhile both Splitter and Blair have really stepped up their defense this season, as well. As for their offense, well... Right now, it's pretty offensive. Keep at it, Chip.
The Nuggets' leading scorer is point guard Ty Lawson, averaging 16.7 a game, but like I say, these guys share the scoring load. Small forward Gallinari is a tough matchup. He reminds me of Dirk Nowitzki in some ways--tall, kind of moves awkwardly, but he can take it to the rim and has a nice jump shot. Arron Afflalo is a fine player, who is averaging 10 points a game and can apply some tough defense. Rudy Fernandez and Andre Miller are part of a veteran and productive bench. About the only guy who hasn't gotten into the act yet is the rookie from UTEP that at least one Pounder covets tremendously. But, who knows? Maybe tonight will be the NBA debut of Julyan Stone. I don't know if the Nuggets have anybody who is currently playing at an All Star level, but they are crazy deep. These guys, as always, love to run, so the Spurs really need to take care of the ball and minimize turnovers. One thing to note about the Nuggets: they are defending, too. They are giving up just 93 points a game, and according to Basketball-Reference.com, guess who leads the league in Defensive Rating? No it's not the Bulls or Heat, it's the Denver Nuggets. In last night's victory over the Hornets, Denver showed what they are capable of. The game was close, low-scoring and hard fought, until the Nuggets put on a 19-0 run starting late in the third quarter to put the game away. That run was fueled by several forced turnovers that ended with fast break points, just the kind of stretch that this Nuggets team thrives on.
The Spurs and the Nuggets are both playing good basketball to start off the season, and I expect this to be a great game. San Antone looked a little gassed the second half of that Mavericks game, but beating up on defenseless little ponies can take a lot out of you, and a day off should help. We will be missing Manu for some time; obviously, there are some things you can't replace, even if you're Dr. Frankenstein, and Manu was playing at such a high level when he went down. Jefferson and Parker are going to have to continue playing great, and guys like Neal, Green and Anderson are going to need to chip in. But that is exactly what has been happening so far. It is exciting seeing the young guys start to contribute significantly. Personally, I have been very encouraged by the Spurs' defense. Last season, I kept looking in vain for any signs that the defense was coming around, but really it never materialized. Guys like Splitter, Blair, Leonard and Green have added some defensive stuff to the mix, and I really think our team defense has a higher ceiling this season. Tonight is a good early test with the high-flying Nuggets coming to town.

NBA Stats Cube Lineup Comparison Here. Here is some Nuggets perspective: Denver Stiffs
As always Tony must dominate Fisher, and NBA league pass is recommended for those who are willing to pony up the cash. Almost every Spurs game will be broadcast there, which is especially helpful for those of us who aren't in the San Antonio area. Please don't post links to illegal game feeds in the game thread. Links to illegal feeds are not permitted on SBNation, but you can probably find them out there on the internets if you're resourceful and desperate.

You still have Anderson as the starter? Think he’ll really start?
anirontag - January 7, 2012
I really have no idea. I started to write about whether Pop was going to alternate Neal and Anderson, or decide based upon opponent matchups, or had decided Anderson wasn’t ready, yet… It’s hard to say after Anderson saw such little playing time against Dallas. I don’t think Pop puts a whole lot of weight in who starts, but more on what is working as the game progresses. I guess I am hoping both Anderson and Neal will see a lot of minutes tonight.

AND GREEN! MOAR OF HIM PLZ!
SpursfanSteve - January 7, 2012
I think Green is slowly becoming Pops favorite with his D. I would like to see Green in the game more just because of the good D and great energy he brings to the team.
spurlover - January 7, 2012 via mobile
He got beaten pretty badly several times trying to stay in front of Jason Terry last game, so I wonder if Green has the foot speed to really be a go to defender on quicker guards. Don’t get me wrong, I love the guy. I absolutely agree about his energy and tough defense. He is very smart and crafty, hustles like crazy, and has a good three point shot. But I don’t think he is the next Bruce Bowen, at least not yet. Bruce may not have been the fastest guy, either, but he stuck to people like glue, and could literally guard four positions. (I know you didn’t bring up Bruce, but some people have made the comparison.)
Having said that, I love what he brings to the floor for us. That kind of enthusiasm and hustle is contagious. The kid is relentless, and never quits on a play. He is this year’s Gary Neal for me, a gem that I did not know we had. I know some Pounders saw it coming, but I must not have been paying very close attention to him last season.
quincyscott - January 7, 2012
About him constantly getting beat off the dribble by Terry, yeah, I thought I saw that too. Even against Ellis during the G-State game, and I’m not quite sure if it’s part of the “funneling the defender towards the shot blocker” type of defense. Bottom line, I’m still not completely sold on Green. I get scared every time he tries to dribble the ball.
silverandblack_davis - January 7, 2012
He’s got a great basketball IQ, though. Makes up for a lot.
quincyscott - January 7, 2012
I think in some cases, it’s by design. That said, he’s still an above average defender and Spurs best wing defender. JA isn’t bad, but he’s not that good either.
That said, I think JA should get more time over Neal.

Great preview quincy – this will be a very tough challenge for us. Denver is arguably the best team in the West right now (only b/c we are missing The Sickness)
Joe deLarios - January 7, 2012 via mobile
Nice work Q. It’ll be interesting to see how Pop rolls with the lineups all of this month and for a good part of the year. With so many games crammed into January I think we’ll see a variety of lineups, especially at the SG position.
Big50 - January 7, 2012
So true. Another part of this equation is minutes, just like it is for every team. It is a tough juggling act. But I don’t think we have a single guy on our bench that can’t contribute in some way, which is a great luxury for the coaching staff. Some of the guys are unproven and inexperienced, such as Anderson and Leonard, but I think they will only get better as they see more playing time.
quincyscott - January 7, 2012
Good preview Q.
Add Koufos to the list of front court guys they have. They are crazy deep. And I personally think that not having Wilson Chandler for the first couple of months might be a blessing in disguise since Gallo seems to be coming along great with more playing time. If he gets his 3 point stroke back, he could be a star.
Edg5 - January 7, 2012
I saw Gallo a few times while he was in Europe during the lockout.
He and Kirilenko(CSKA Moskow) were like 2-3 level above anyone else.
He made 3s, crashed the boards, drove the lane and defended very well.
He is a star in the making, and i would bet he’ll be an All-Star in a few years.

Neanderthal Nugget fans use the subject box when we comment...
Last night’s Nugget game was a game the Melo, JR, KMart Nuggets would have given up on at halftime. Trading Melo was for the best, notwithstanding his game winning shots.
margabelle - January 7, 2012
Yeah, Melo is kind of a sulker. Not what you want when the chips are down.
quincyscott - January 7, 2012
That’s your choice. There is a method to their madness, though. Threads actually run smoother the less the subject box is used.
WaveOcean - January 7, 2012
I have never thought of Melo as a winner in the NBA.
He scores and it seems that is all there is in the game to him.
LionZion - January 7, 2012
Agreed. He puts up empty stats
Manuwar - January 7, 2012
Couldn’t agree more – I was really surprised at how much (and how well) they are passing the ball this year.
CapHill - January 7, 2012
I think that this weekend could be big for the spurs. Living in either Boston or Los Angeles I am generally forced to look to ESPN for news on the spurs and right now it seems as though every other day there is a new favorite team to come out of the west: Clippers, Thunder, Denver, hell even Portland had about 48 hours of being the favorite. This weekend would be a nice statement to the NBA that this spurs team is for real even with manu resting his legs to make a great playoff run with us.
I am psyched and am starting to feel the spirit of ’99. In pop we trust and in manu we believe and of course in April, May and June we Win.
ItCouldHappen - January 7, 2012
alright now lets sweep these bums
polartownjunkie - January 7, 2012
I’ve thought the same thing. Pretty scary. And Galo is the only other player in the association who I’ve seen even attempt to shamgod someone the way Manu does with frequency. Galo is pretty cool in my book.
Manuwar - January 7, 2012
No way, Gallo can do that???
silverandblack_davis - January 7, 2012
Galo. The tasteful, cheap Nowitzki?
quincyscott - January 7, 2012
Dirk 0.6. Gallinari should develop a one-legged fade away jumper, too.
silverandblack_davis - January 7, 2012
Probably needs to listen to more Hasselhoff.

Nice preview, Quincy. Want to know something funny? You taught my little brother, Matt. I think he said it was an English class. Small world.
Fred Silva - January 7, 2012
Well if I taught him, it better have been an English class. If I remember correctly, he played basketball. And he was smart and funny. Tell your brother I said hello!
quincyscott - January 7, 2012
Yup, that’s him. I will. He actually reads PtR; he just never comments. I’m sure he’ll come across this soon.
Fred Silva - January 7, 2012
I never had trouble with him not commenting in my classroom.
quincyscott - January 7, 2012
Ha, he is definitely loud. And he doesn’t have that voice that most eveyone has saying, “Maybe this isn’t appropriate at this time.”
Fred Silva - January 7, 2012
ahh, a brother’s love.
Mr. Scott! I saw your screen name a few days ago on my brother’s comments and remembered being back in your class debating the effectiveness of Shaq and the greatness of Tim Duncan, of course. Hope you and your wife are doing well.
And to PTR’ers that wonder what a class with QuincyScott would be like, I remember great talks we had relating the Spurs to every lesson in English class. When we had quizzes scheduled, all of my friends would beg me to bring up a spurs topic. We would launch into a discussion that would take up the class and wouldn’t you know it, the class would be over and the quiz would be pushed back a day. At the end of the discussion, Mr. Scott would realize what happened, shrug, and finish the class with his famous catchphrase, “I digress”.
Although you remember me for my commenting, I take that as a compliment coming from PTR guys! Also, out of the hundreds of students you have taught, you remember me! ha! Go spurs go.

We are doing great, but we have one fewer dog and two more children now. My son is about to turn four and his little sister is seven months old. Needless to say, sleep is a thing of the past for me.
OK, all that stuff about injecting Spurs stuff into my classroom is simply not true. We only had shooting drills twice a week, tops, and on Fridays I never wore my Robinson jersey. The years have twisted your memory, Grasshopper.

I’m new to commenting on this, baby steps. Congrats on the children and sorry about the dog.

I have to hassle you, of course!
By the way, love the avatar. Bruce Bowen is still my favorite Spur ever.
As for Lucy, it’s probably for the best. I get the feeling she would not have been very good with kids. She died the week my son came home from the hospital, coincidentally enough. She was a bitch. Take last sentence any way you want to, it fits.

Raptors < 76ers
Thunder < Rockets
Hornets < Mavericks (Let’s go Hornets!)
Bucks < Clippers
Jazz > Warriors

Looking at the Nuggets boxscore from last night reminded me that former (and future?) Toros player Squeaky Johnson is still on the team. Only played 1:30 last night with one assist. Lance Thomas was cut by the Hornets and returned to the Toros, where he’s played in the past couple of games.
Cory Joseph is starting for the Toros and in two games has averaged 34 minutes with 10.5pts, 3 assists and 4 reb. The star for the Toros recently has been guard Justin Dentmon, averaging 23ppg, 4.6 assists and 4.3 reb. The recent return of Lance Thomas (who is back to being a starter) has cut into the minutes for Da’Sean Butler, though the top frontcourt player has been Eric Dawson. The Toros have the best record in the dleague, and are looking even stronger with the additions of Joseph, Thomas and Butler.
Alamo - January 7, 2012
Awesome. I hope Butler is improving. I would love to see both him and Joseph succeed.
