i luv this site - January 3, 2012
Okay. I can’t remember anything about him.
LionZion - January 3, 2012
guess RC has a big back up plan with all this player movement post Ginobili injury
i luv this site - January 3, 2012
Oh sweet. I liked this guy back then. I think this is a good move.

grego21 - January 3, 2012
Thanks for the info. I read both good and bad things. Although the wingspan sure helps, he still short for the position and the current need is size. Hope I’m wrong. Rebounds well but not a good defender. Per 40 off the charts? That can be tricky if he gets those numbers against 2nd stringers and in garbage time.
Anyway, glad the FO is looking.
Sh!fty - January 3, 2012
A lot of that sounds pretty bad… But, I do remember not hating this kid.
In the 666 - January 3, 2012 via mobile
Some of his downsides can be fixed with good defensive habits. He sounds like Blair pt. 2 in the assessment though. Reaches too much. That haunts me now.
grego21 - January 3, 2012
Blair 0.5?
silverandblack_davis - January 3, 2012
Depends
grego21 - January 3, 2012
We are signing Dejuan Blairs older brother? ;)
alamobro - January 4, 2012
I thought he was taller! 6’8? Another short PF?
Sh!fty - January 3, 2012
Actually, that’s ok. Bonner is tall, but he plays like a 2 guard. Blair is well, just small.
grego21 - January 3, 2012
Well, at least this kind of addresses what I was talking about in the other thread about signing more than roster fillers.
Sh!fty - January 3, 2012
Bonner is 6’10 with a 6’8.75" wingspan. Let’s not confuse him with 6’8" and 7’ 3.5".
Fred Silva - January 3, 2012
Yes, but Bonner has wasted height.
Leonard already is a better 4 than Bonner. Not that I’m saying that is much, but as much as Bonner tries, there’s only so much he can do with his limited abilities.
grego21 - January 3, 2012
Same team. I’m not making the case for Bonner, ever.
Fred Silva - January 3, 2012
If not Bonner, Blair? :)
grego21 - January 3, 2012
Hes actually 6’9
Spurs Yoda - January 3, 2012 via mobile
This I like.
Yes Ike Diogu is and undersized PF (we have a lot of those already) but at least he can play. He always has excelled in short minutes, but every time he ended up on the wrong team for him.
He is more than ok for a 5th big. He has a good post game, very good offensively and can rebound really well. Defense? well, we have tiago and tim for that.
Chilai - January 3, 2012
I also like this move. As you stated, he has performed well when given PT and although he doesn’t have the ideal size this team needs, he does have a pretty decent skill set.
MG99 - January 3, 2012
We did want Chuck Hayes (or at least a good amount of fans), who is even smaller… 6’8 is passable as long as they play better D than Bonner.
grego21 - January 3, 2012
IS he any better than Gani Lawal?
Heman - January 3, 2012
He was pretty good in college. I would say he had bad luck on his teams that he got on. But then in limited minutes, you could potentially get his best work.
grego21 - January 3, 2012
9th pick overall. Far from a sure thing but at least it means the potential is there.
Sh!fty - January 3, 2012
We said the same thing about Samaki Walker.
wildcat110 - January 3, 2012
yes he is, he is much better
Chilai - January 3, 2012
Hollinger on Twitter:
It feels good to hear positive things from non-spurs coverage.
Sh!fty - January 3, 2012
This feels good.
LionZion - January 3, 2012 via iPhone app
I like the move for what it is. The team needed a 5th big. I remember Diogu scoring 30+ on a game for Sacramento. Hopefully he can cut down on the fouling and give the team some good minutes when needed.
Edg5 - January 3, 2012
It was 27, but still nice
Spurs Yoda - January 3, 2012 via mobile
He had a 32 points 11 boards game with the Kings against the Nuggets.

I dont know anything about him……

youtube him. Good highlights. Even with Duncan and Mohammid on him

nice
nice highlights, he looks just like Blair but taller. Lets hope his hops are still there. Loved the damage they show him doing to Dirk…
i'mwithstupid - January 3, 2012
SBN profile says he is 6’9. NBA or ESPN hav no profile on him.
Sh!fty - January 3, 2012
Nba does and has him listed as 6’9
http://www.nba.com/playerfile/ike_diogu/
Spurs Yoda - January 3, 2012 via mobile
ESPN does. I just read his per year stats on their. Posting from phone. Can’t link I think.
LionZion - January 3, 2012 via iPhone app
Damn it, I must have spelled his name wrong.
Sh!fty - January 3, 2012
he is 6’8, dont be fooled
Chilai - January 3, 2012
6’6.5" w/o shoes, just like Blair
I always trust DraftExpress
Manu ex Machina - January 4, 2012
I like the pic up from everything im reading on his stats. Good fifth big and bonner cold shooting alternative
Spurs Yoda - January 3, 2012 via mobile
The top needs to be edited. Should be 6’9.
Ike’s skills look like the love child of Dejaun Blair and Antonio McDyess.
Spurs Yoda - January 3, 2012 via mobile
This just begs for a visual aid by someone more proficient at such things than I am.
SleepCrack - January 3, 2012 via mobile
Just like always, Spurs sign a player nobody’s even mentioned as a possibility. I’m a bit “meh” on this, but we’ll see how it goes.
Tim C. - January 3, 2012
Poor mans McDyess?
Reguardless, its a big body. Something we needed. Im surprised we didnt sign a ten day.
Spurs Yoda - January 3, 2012 via mobile
Dice could make the mid range…I don’t think he can make it consistently
Heman - January 3, 2012
Hence the poor man version.
Spurs Yoda - January 3, 2012 via mobile
Perhaps he is the dirt poor version?
grego21 - January 3, 2012
he is not comparable to MCdyees. San antonio was a superb defender and a midrange shooter. Diogu is a post scorer and rebounder who sucks at defense.
Chilai - January 3, 2012
Had microfracture surgrey two years ago and hasnt looked the same according to sources. Im surprised we signed him if we are concerned about this. We had to have worked him out.
Spurs Yoda - January 3, 2012 via mobile
Most of the guys who’ve had microfracture surgery take a full two years to get back. I don’t know how Ike will work out, but at least he’s another big body.
CapHill - January 3, 2012
Still its surprising. I would like to get some intel on why we picked him.
Spurs Yoda - January 3, 2012 via mobile
Potential + what is out there
grego21 - January 3, 2012
good call, and true on the 2yr window…
In the 666 - January 3, 2012
At this point anything is better than Bonner
Kevin21 - January 3, 2012
Alrighty, a big! Height doesn’t hurt.
Ed (dfjmed) - January 3, 2012
Is this the beginning of the revolving door like last year?
indiancharlie - January 3, 2012
This isn’t a 10-day, it’s a 1-year deal. So the Spurs obviously feel like they want him for more than an audition.
Tim C. - January 3, 2012
exactly. We need details.
Spurs Yoda - January 3, 2012
It might be non-guaranteed, like Novak.
wildcat110 - January 3, 2012
Probably a partially guaranteed then.
grego21 - January 3, 2012
Exactly. Surprising. We need the details.
Spurs Yoda - January 3, 2012
Had to be the first to say it, even if i dont know it.
Welcome to the Spurs Ike!

Spurs Yoda - January 3, 2012
Good, I used to like him as a player. I just hope he is in shape
spursfan87 - January 3, 2012
Signing him for a full year makes it seem that way.
grego21 - January 3, 2012
I’d rather it have been Andre Iguodala instead of Ike Diogu, but at least it wasn’t Ime Udoka.
wildcat110 - January 3, 2012
There would have been a massive synchronous eye roll throughtout San Antonio if the post read, Spurs have resign Ime Udoka.
Spurs Yoda - January 3, 2012
Uhhh, ok.
Iguodala is a 2/3, not a 4/5. Pre-this year, sure, but the Spurs are loaded at the wings.
grego21 - January 3, 2012
Ime Udoka, Iguodala and Ike Diogu all sound alike. That was my only real point.
wildcat110 - January 3, 2012
Diogu isn't bad!
But he’s not what SA needed. They should look into “Agent Zero” Gilbert Arenas… They need points and San Anton is the perfect environment for the mercurial talent.
People forget Arenas is just 29 years old and the dude was an all-star before that locker room incident… Since then, he hasn’t been given a fair shot, and he’d help any team looking for a scoring guard who’s big enough to play 2 but is a true PG with the handles.
I know this is a spurs site, but here’s a cool Warriors site if you guys have any interest.
trecole696 - January 3, 2012
Or
they should get on the phone with a team like Detroit or someone who’s not going anywhere this season and inquire about a Ben Gordon, or maybe Correy Maggette from Charlotte. I’m sure either could be had for relatively cheap in terms of what the Spurs would have to trade.
Would you Spurs fans trade a DeJuan Blair for someone like Maggette? Charlotte needs a young big man in the center to build around (they got Boris Diaw running their center spot right now)… A young guy like Blair or Splitter away for some scoring help while Manu’s out? I bet he’s out 2 months and that’s over 1/2 the season. Tough situation there in!
trecole696 - January 3, 2012
My guess is that the Spurs will ride it out with Anderson and Neal, and not make a big roster change.
quincyscott - January 3, 2012 via mobile
So trade one of our few big men for yet another guard? That wouldn’t help the roster at all.
CapHill - January 3, 2012
Blair for Maggette? Absolutely not. If we become desperate (meaning that our young guys won’t step up), a look at someone like Arenas could be warranted as a potential stopgap solution.
Kondor - January 3, 2012
You got the first part of stop correct, but stopgap he is not. He’s more like a ball movement stopper.
grego21 - January 3, 2012
im sorry, I dont want to be offensive but this doesnt make any sense. We dont have much trouble scoring and we are lacking on bigs. Besides, all the guys mentioned are black hole cancers…the exact oposite of what the spurs organization seeks in their players. NEVER gonna happen
Chilai - January 3, 2012
+1
I think he is just promoting his blog or so. Or he has no idea about who else is on the team and is just trying to think of a all-star replacement for Manu. Who knows.
LionZion - January 3, 2012
Actually, I think we’re pretty good on scoring. We brought back all our scorers from last year, and last year we had a top 10 (top 5 for most of the season IIRC) offense.
SpursfanSteve - January 3, 2012
one reason that will never happen, i have to “point” out.

Spurs Yoda - January 3, 2012
poor Oberto
spursfan87 - January 3, 2012
yep
Chilai - January 3, 2012
Ha! Didnt even see him. He looks sadly out of place. He did t deserve that.
Spurs Yoda - January 3, 2012 via mobile
No way. Also, don’t want ot trade for a guard. If Spurs are going to trade, you get another big, not another guard.
Both Gordon and Maggette are big basketball hogs.
grego21 - January 3, 2012
Josh Guyer (completely deck) - January 3, 2012

spursfan87 - January 3, 2012
I doubt it.

They just had him dribble his way up and down I-35.
Manu ex Machina - January 4, 2012

In the 666 - January 4, 2012
Ed (dfjmed) - January 3, 2012
I like it
Manuwar - January 3, 2012
Kevin 21 is right on target. Anyone even masquerading as a “4” is better than Bonner.
I have been screaming for years from my obscure, remote position to dump Bonner, but
to my utter amazement, R.C. and Pop have stuck with him since Robert Horry’s departure.
mercer - January 3, 2012
as a 10 or 15 minute player off the bench when his shots are falling he is awesome. The problem is when he plays more than that
Chilai - January 3, 2012
Exactly.
grego21 - January 3, 2012
Wait, are we talking about Bonner or Diogu?
silverandblack_davis - January 3, 2012
Bonner. Diogu is not a shooter
grego21 - January 3, 2012
Bonner’s weaknesses far outweigh any positives he may possess. The fact that he’s been
the first or second big off the bench illustrates how thin we’ve been up front, which is now
particularly magnified with McD’s retirement.
mercer - January 3, 2012
His weaknesses show when he plays big minutes, but when he’s on and the team uses him well, it causes the other team damage.
grego21 - January 3, 2012
We have got to stop talking about Bonner this season. Bonner’s corpse has been exhumed and burnt again. He is not our problem now anymore I think. Everyone on the team will struggle without Manu.
LionZion - January 3, 2012
In short, Ike Diogu is VERY similar to Blair, a bit slower but more polished.
Chilai - January 4, 2012
If he boxes out, maybe Blair will finally follow suit! I can dream, right?
