As the Spurs come off of their 2nd road win of the year and first win in the last four games they get to face a high flying Hawks team that is playing well. The Hawks sit at 13-5 and have acquitted themselves well this season despite being with out Kirk Hinrich and losing Al Horford for a large chunk of the year. They sit atop the Southeast Division ahead of both Florida teams. The question for this game will be if the Spurs can shut down the high scoring offense that Atlanta brings to the table?

The Spurs will be tested tonight after getting bailed out by the GOAT PUFF in the Big Easy. Atlanta is 6th in the NBA in scoring and 7th in points allowed. Much like in years past they're big and athletic. The Hawks are a pretty balanced team with 4 players averaging double digits and yet nobody averages over 20 points per game. Joe Johnson and Josh Smith are their two biggest weapons, but Jeff Teague and Marvin Williams are no slouches. Last year the Spurs won both match ups fairly easily, but I wouldn't discount this Atlanta team. They appear to have matured a bit. Their coach, Larry Drew, ripped the team for it's play in a loss last week. Instead of pouting about it, they went out and won their next game by 27 over a hapless Cleveland squad.

After seeing Duncan and Splitter get some burn together there is yet hope that a new set of twin towers can emerge to lead the Spurs yet again. That said, Blair has had some good games against the Hawks. In last year's first meeting the smallish big man racked up 16 points, 12 rebounds, while getting 3 assists and 4 steals. In the second encounter Blair was limited to 13 minutes of play, but still got 7 points and 5 boards. Of course, that was near the end of the year when Pop had decided Antonio McDyess was going to get the bigger minutes*.
*This makes one think that Pop might be leading into the same type of scenario this year. Start Blair for a large portion of the season and then develop a better defensive lineup with Splitter later in the year and into the playoffs. Time will tell, but it would be the same thing that happend last year.
Overall this game is going to come down to execution and who can do it better. Both teams rank in the top 10 in FG% and both are very good 3-point shooting teams. If the Spurs are going to be able to overcome this Hawks squad they will need to play solid perimeter defense and funnel all the penetration to their big men, and by big men I mean Duncan and Splitter. Also, Atlanta doesn't have the deepest front court, especially after loosing Horford. I wouldn't be surprised to see the foul count play a big role as both teams will be looking to set up the long ball with penetration.
It looks like the Hawks will get Kirk Hinrich back against the Spurs tonight. Hinrich has yet to play a game for Atlanta and will only help them as they try to make a deep run in the playoffs. The Hawks have a couple members of the 2000-2001 All-Star Team anchoring their bench. It's ok, I didn't realize Jerry Stackhouse was still alive either and I just barely remember T-Mac playing something like basketball last year. Along with Jannero Pargo and Rad Vald Radmanovic, this might be the most pure chuckers on one bench ever. I'm not sure any of those 4 have seen a shot they didn't like. Talk about volume shooting, wowzer.
Speaking of benches, the Spurs role players need to improve. Outside of Green and Splitter, San Antonio's role players haven't been helping the cause as much as will be necessary. RJ, I'm looking at you. I know it's easy for me to pick on Rage, and he even had a decent game against the NOOCH, but I need to see more. You're getting paid as an elite, or at least semi-elite, player. Show me some of that early season agression on defense and keep hitting those open looks from deep. RJ's defense will be a big key tonight as the Hawks boast a lot of talent in the form of guys that play the 2/3/4. I'm hoping to see Rage tonight and not Princess Peanut.
Before your song of the day, let me just say that I'm glad the game isn't in Hotlanta where the players play and they ride on them things like every day. Here's your song for the day:

As always Tony must dominate Fisher, and NBA league pass is recommended for those who are willing to pony up the cash. Almost every Spurs game will be broadcast there, which is especially helpful for those of us who aren't in the San Antonio area. Please don't post links to illegal game feeds in the game thread. Links to illegal feeds are not permitted on SBNation, but you can probably find them out there on the internets if you're resourceful and desperate.

Fuck it, Spurs by 25
spursfan87 - January 25, 2012
It’s because it’s a home game, it’s it?
J.R. Wilco - January 25, 2012
'Cause Stone Cold said so!
spursfan87 - January 25, 2012
First Stone Cold reference I’ve seen here in quite some time.
Big50 - January 25, 2012
It was still it, last time I checked. ;)
alamobro - January 25, 2012
Thanks for turning me on to X Ray dog. Never knew such an outfit existed.
alamobro - January 25, 2012
Yeah, pretty cool. I stumbled on to that a few days ago. If you like that check out this.
Big50 - January 25, 2012
Have you ever heard Evanescence EP album “Origin”? It had as many songs on it as an entire album, and it is actually by far their best work. Many people think that “Fallen” is their first and best album, when it is actually very inferior to “Origin”, it has a few songs on in that are just remakes (inferior sounding) of Origin.
Anyway, I have never heard anyone do that genre of music that well, and I don’t think anyone ever will. Whether or not you like evanescence, I implore you to listen to it, since it is much better than any of their more well known works.

I’ll check it out. Thanks.

Yes sir Big..the great Dominique Wilkins #21 who also played for the Spurs.
indiancharlie - January 25, 2012
Yes. Was there leading scorer the year before Tim Duncan joined the team.
Big50 - January 25, 2012
*their (that was bad, my mom would be so disappointed)
Big50 - January 25, 2012
But you caught it and self-corrected!
Spurlady - January 25, 2012
Thats exactly why Dominique is one of my favorite Spurs of all time :D
spursfan87 - January 25, 2012
I lived in CA back then, but went to a game with my dad while visiting SA. Dominque was 48 years old or something, and brought in purely to entertain fans while getting the best lottery slot possible. He scored 20-something on low-percentage shots, but at one point got the ball near the top of the key, blew by his man with one dribble and launched into a windmill jam. Amazing that a human could do that, much less one his age.
doggydogworld - January 25, 2012
Yeah, I went to a game that year against the Bullets, back when they had Weber, Howard and Co. They destroyed the Spurs, but ’Niqe was at least entertaining.
Big50 - January 25, 2012
Spurs by 9. ATL is 13-5 & we’re 11-7 (correct if I’m in error) so I hesitate to think it will be blown out of the water at home.
cojones2thewall - January 25, 2012
This would be another great measuring stick game if we can steal it. ATL beat both Miami and Chicago this month so they’re definitely not a bottom feeder team anymore. Keys to the win? Don’t give them opportunities for transition points (dunks) via turnovers and for gods sake, don’t allow open three point shots!!
4TimeChamps...and counting? - January 25, 2012 via mobile
But they are an up and down team. 5-4 on the road and without Horfford, Road always becomes tougher.
grego21 - January 25, 2012
good write up Big50 – i expect to see our frontcourt dominate tonight
Joe deLarios - January 25, 2012
Thanks Joe. I sure hope so, it’ll be disappointing if they don’t.
Big50 - January 25, 2012
It will be interesting to see who actually gets the start at SG. Neal started the 2nd half last game in place of Leonard. It seemed a bit like Neal was out of the starter role because he might be needed as the backup PG, but not sure he’s given much consideration for that role any longer. It seems like it could wind up with any among Neal, Leonard, Anderson (who started the first game Manu was out) or even Danny Green. Green would seem to be playing best, but whether or not he is made a starter might depend on if he is seen as being too valuable to the bench. I’d think Leonard is most valuable as RJ’s backup, and RJ may be getting a bit too worn down with minutes. I think I’d go with Anderson back in as the starter, though not necessarily the most minutes or closer. You’d then have Neal, Green and Leonard playing with the second unit. It could of course be that the Spurs start showing more confidence in Cory, letting Neal start with Cory and Green playing together.
Alamo - January 25, 2012
I think they might stay with Leonard due to the size of Atlanta. Neal would get destroyed by Johnson. And Parker isn’t big enough either, to switch places. It would be funny if Anderson somehow made a random appearance as a starter…
Atlanta is too big to allow for Neal to start. He shouldn’t actually play a lot of minutes if they have Johnson/Williams in, unless he’s backup PG, which is a bad thing in itself.
I agree with you that Leonard should backup RJ. That worked very well. I think JA should take on the starting 2 guard just to give them some more size and better D.
grego21 - January 25, 2012
I think Leonard should start. Johnson is an ISO type of offensive player and Kawhi is good at guarding those. I wouldn’t mind Kawhi guarding Josh Smith either if the Spurs go small.
Edg5 - January 25, 2012
Perhaps for this game, he should start. I think teams have no scouted Leonard, making it much harder to be effective as a starter though. He’s losing a lot of minutes now due to starting bad. I think he should see the starters at time, but he’s likely better off beating up on second units since his offense is not that strong.
I wouldn’t mind seeing Leonard on Smith though.
Thinking beyond the game (until Manu/TJ back), I’d prefer a Green/Leonard second unit though. Honestly, JA is struggling, but might as well throw him in there. Just pull him quick if he’s not working and then bring in Green or Leonard.
grego21 - January 25, 2012
I was talking about this game. Going forward, it’s hard to tell who would be the best option. If Manu is coming back to the starting lineup, I think Anderson or Neal should start. If Manu is going to be coming off the bench, I’d like to see Leonard continue to get comfortable playing with the starters.
Edg5 - January 25, 2012
Hey! Nice sig.
J.R. Wilco - January 25, 2012
When Manu comes back, that’s going to be the biggest question: To start, or not to start?
CapHill - January 25, 2012
Nice new sig. Alex Dewey is quickly becoming our new life coach.
indiancharlie - January 26, 2012
With the recent starting lineups, I’m actually not quite sure who is playing what and if it makes any difference between Leonard and RJ. Since RJ is the normal SF I imagine that he remains listed there while Leonard is listed as SG regardless of who they might match up with on the other team. The last game Green came in for Leonard, followed by Anderson coming in for RJ. I’d think there might be just a slight advantage to having either RJ or Kawhi in with them playing alongside either Green or Anderson. Granted the differences may be relatively minor depending upon who they are being asked to guard.
Alamo - January 25, 2012
Well, you can interchange Joe and Williams. They both are big wings. So either way, Neal doesn’t fit.
Honestly, I don’t really mind if Kawhi starts, but it might make more sense for Kawhi to spell RJ. That seemed to work well, pre-injury mess.
grego21 - January 25, 2012
Starting is overrated, (Just ask Manu.) The question is, who is going to close the game if it’s close. I’m hoping for another Tony, Danny, RJ, Tiago and Duncan lineup.
Fred Silva - January 25, 2012
It is overrated. I agreed whole heartedly, but starting can set a tone, so you want the right mix of players. Neal at the starting 2 is not a good idea the majority of the time…
grego21 - January 25, 2012
At least with a Duncan/Blair front line..
grego21 - January 25, 2012
winner, Winner!
indiancharlie - January 25, 2012
chicken dinner
grego21 - January 25, 2012
Or, we could start Bonner with Duncan. Think about it!!!!
grego21 - January 25, 2012
-10. I want those 5 seconds back.
Fred Silva - January 25, 2012
Speaking of Bonner, the Toros have added Luke Bonner to the roster. Luke Zeller had been given his release a week or two ago.
Alamo - January 25, 2012
Wildcat will be happy about this ground breaker.
grego21 - January 25, 2012
As long as they have a player named Luke, all is well. Feel the force, Luke.
doggydogworld - January 25, 2012
Love with the 4 year extension. Yes! Now there’ll be less “Love should play for the Spurs”
per NBA.com
I think Gallinari also got an extension, but NBA.com seemed to pull that off the “breaking news” ticker right after Love’s was posted.
grego21 - January 25, 2012
… but he SHOULD.
J.R. Wilco - January 25, 2012
Ok, fine. I used the wrong words…
grego21 - January 25, 2012
Anyone else see Hollinger Playoff Predictions?
Hollinger Playoff Predictions
He says we squeak it out with the 9th seed. Barely. Sad thing is…. the records are so close that I can’t dispute it right now. We have to start winning on the road, and February is going to suck.
Spurs Yoda - January 25, 2012
You mean 8, right? Given some of the teams ahead of the Spurs, it definitely is fair game.
grego21 - January 25, 2012
LOL. keyboard fail.
Spurs Yoda - January 25, 2012
I really can’t see the Clips missing the playoffs. Or the Spurs. And Utah hasn’t convinced me they’re for real yet, so I see them missing. But among the playoff teams in the West, there’s a lot of parity.
Tim C. - January 25, 2012
And Grizz are likely going to bounce around. With Arthur/Zbo, it’s tough to say they will stay where they are, or fall to the bottom
grego21 - January 25, 2012
Its not actually a personal Hollinger prediction. Its part of one of his statistical algorithms.
alamobro - January 25, 2012
Fortunately, the algorithm has no way of knowing that Manu will be back eventually.
alamobro - January 25, 2012
Or TJ or the crazy scheduling.
grego21 - January 25, 2012
Hate to tell you, but April is worse than Feb.
J.R. Wilco - January 25, 2012
At least Feb comes before April except after…
grego21 - January 25, 2012
Spurs are favored by 5 points tonight. Thanks, Vegas. That made me feel better.
Fred Silva - January 25, 2012
Anyone hear any updates on Manu or TJ? Its been quiet…..too quiet. Perhaps CIA Pop is molding them into a mega assist person.
Spurs Yoda - January 25, 2012
TJ had a torn hamstring, I would imagine he will be out at least as long as Manu if not longer.
http://tracking.si.com/2012/01/12/spurs-guard-t-j-ford-will-miss-4-6-weeks-with-torn-hamstring/
alamobro - January 25, 2012
Yeah. Just was wondering if there is a target date. I was thinking March 1st the latest.
Spurs Yoda - January 25, 2012
Going to the game tonight. Let the winning continue! Go Spurs Go!
Marky G - January 25, 2012
Have fun and get us the win!
Edg5 - January 25, 2012
Enjoy, I’m so jealous.
