Pounding The Rock

San Antonio Spurs 104, New Orleans Hornets 102; A FARS-inating 4th Quarter

The Spurs managed to secure their second road win in a close contest against the New Orleans Hornets. Coming off two losses, it was evident early on that the Spurs planned to win this game, one way or another. Unfortunately, the Hornets were not about to give this one away without a fight. This is a game that lends itself to a FARS recap, so let's get started.

Star-divide

I thought the fourth quarter played out in such a way that it greatly summarized the first three. Due to time constraints, I'm going to begin FARS with the Spurs down by 1 point, 79 - 80, at the start of the fourth quarter.

4th Quarter 12:00. Spurs 79 Hornets 80
Up to this point, neither team had been able to gain the upper-hand. While both shot incredibly well, neither was able to slow down the other. It was looking like yet another game in which the Spurs had run head-first into a hot shooting home team.

To begin the fourth, Pop went with Gary Neal, Danny Green, Richard Jefferson, Matt Bonner, and Tiago Splitter. A strange lineup, indeed. Pop played many unusual lineups throughout this game. He even dusted off James Anderson for 10 minutes of action; Anderson had not played in the previous three games.

In the first play of the fourth quarter, Danny Green immediately put his basketball acumen on display. He begins with a Belinelli assignment. He pressures Belinelli, who is forced to make a difficult pass to Landry. Due to the pressure, Landry fumbles the ball and recovers further away from the basket than he is comfortable. He kicks it back to Belinelli at the top of the key with 8 seconds on the shot clock. Danny crowds the shooter and forces him to put the ball on the floor. Belinelli drives into Tiago and gets the ball poked away from behind by Green. Green taps the ball down off Belinelli's leg, Spurs ball. Danny "Big" Green +3

4th Quarter 11:20, Spurs 82 Hornets 80
Danny is playing point guard. He gets a very high screen from Tiago and takes a few dribbles to the right elbow, putting pressure on the defense. As Tiago rolls down the middle of the paint, the defense sucks in and Danny skips it across the court to RJ in the left corner, swish for three. Danny Green's court vision is impressive. That was not an easy pass, but more difficult was the recognition of the open man. Danny "Big" Green +5

4th Quarter 11:05. Spurs 84 Hornets 80
Good defense can be contagious. Now, Neal pressures Vasquez in the deep corner. Neal gets a piece of the pass and RJ finds the loose ball as he begins a pseudo-fast-break. I say pseudo because once the ball crosses half-court, it's 4 on 4. Green flashes right down the middle and RJ finds him as he runs towards the top of the key. Kaman is a little slow in recognizing the threat and Green lays it in before Kaman has the opportunity to get his hands up. And now Green's athleticism is put on display. A great cut, perfect ball control, and the quickness and jumping ability to rise above the defense for an easy layin. Timeout, Hornets. Danny "Big" Green +5 (At this point, you may be wondering where I came up with Danny "Big" Green. Well, I went to Dartmouth and it's not everyday that I find myself in a position to use "Big Green." So go, Danny "Big" Green, and go THE Big Green.)

4th Quarter 10:36 Spurs 84 Hornets 83
How many times has this kind of play happened to us this year? The Spurs are playing great defense on this possession. The Hornets are disjointed and scrambling. With 5 seconds on the shot clock, Jarret Jack picks up the ball with no where to go. Tiago is all over him. He finds Aminu, who pump fakes, but can't find any room for his shot. He kicks it to Vasquez four feet behind the three point line at the top of the key. He drills it at the buzzer. WHAT!?! That is awful basketball, Greivis. You should be ashamed of yourself. Vasquez -10. (That's bad basketball Karma. Even though it went in, someone has to be reprimanded.)

4th Quarter 8:48 Spurs 84 Hornets 85
Mistakes were made by both squads and we find ourselves down one a few minutes later. Danny Green is still playing -point guard for the Spurs. He drives and kicks it to RJ. RJ finds an open Bonner who misses, of course. It is the fourth quarter and it is a close game, after all. I hope you didn't get your hopes up. Bonner -5. (It's very interesting that Pop chose to use Danny Green as the backup point guard in favor of Neal or Joseph. It's amazing how Pop sometimes sees exactly what I do, and then there's Matt Bonner.) Bonner -5 more.

4th Quarter 8:09 Spurs 86 Hornets 85
The Spurs find themselves with 10 seconds on the shot clock after a broken play. Danny Green calls for the ball and signals Tiago over for a screen. Danny rubs off Jack and pulls up in front of Kaman for a high-arcing two, nothing but net. Danny "Big" Green +5 (That was a great shot. He put extra arc on that one to be sure that Kaman couldn't get a piece of it.)

4th Quarter 7:37 Spurs 88 Hornets 85
Pop substitutes Parker in for Gary Neal. Another interesting development. He chose to have Danny Green close the game. Parker executes a beautiful pick and roll with Tiago who dunks the ball with two hands. Tiago, obviously, has been playing incredibly as of late. His confidence is soaring. Now that will help the Spurs in the playoffs. Tony +10 (Tony dropped 17 dimes tonight. 17!!!) Tiago +10 (Just an all-around great performance by the big guy.)

4th Quarter 7:25 Spurs 88 Hornets 87
Danny Green is guarding Jack. Jack takes two dribbles at him and pulls up for a jump shot. Danny Green is right there for the contest. Jack hits it. Really, there is nothing more you can do there. It's a well-contested long two pointer. Bad teams really need to stop making those against us. Jack -5 (More bad basketball Karma.)

4th Quarter 6:36 Spurs 88 Hornets 87
Bonner is attempting to play pick and roll defense with Tony. He comes out to bump Vasquez but Landry slipped the screen. As Bonner attempts to waddle back over to Landry, Vasquez throws a pass that hits the back of Bonner's arm. Now, Bonner has no idea where the ball is at this point. He's simply retreating. Yes, this is that bad basketball Karma coming back to get the Hornets. +5 Bonner's backside. -5 Matt Bonner.

4th Quarter 5:57 Spurs 90 Hornets 89
Out of a timeout, Pop inexplicably decides to insert James Anderson back into the game for RJ. Now, RJ has played well for the Spurs thus far. He's made 4 of 7 from deep and has 14 points. It's confusing, I tell you, confusing. Regardless, Anderson makes a nice cut and Splitter feeds him the ball. He misses his first attempt but stays with it for a put-back. Tiago +3 Anderson +5 (I'm still baffled. What's the advantage of playing Anderson over RJ at this moment? Too weird, let's just move on.)

Pop also put Tim back into the game for Bonner. It's Tiago and Tim! Thank you, Pop. We've only been waiting 100+ games for this moment. -10 Pop. (This should have happened 100 games ago.)

4th Quarter 5:04 Spurs 90 Hornets 90
Danny gets the ball with 5 left on the shot clock and has to force one. He misses but there are two Spurs 7-footers under the rim. Tiago snatches the offensive board and is fouled. Who would have thought that playing two 7-footers at the same time might give one an advantage on the boards? +5 Tiago

4th Quarter 4:52 Spurs 92 Hornets 90
Off the inbound, Green attacks the paint. With Tim on his left and Tiago on his right, Green has options. He dumps it off to Tiago who gathers himself and shoots that nice little funky hook shot for two points. +5 Danny "Big" Green +5 Tiago

Tim, the wily veteran, goes Horry-retro with a, "I'm running down the court... SURPRISE!" move and it pays off. Belinelli is surprised and steps over the line, Spurs ball. Tim +5 (Okay, I'm one of the people that was bashing Pop for resting Tim the last two games. Honestly, I was more upset that he benched Tim in the fourth quarter of the winnable Kings game, but I definitely was not pleased with the loss in Houston. That little bit of rest allowed Tim to play incredibly tonight. This move, where he fakes as if he is going to run down the court and then jumps into the guard's passing lane, is only made when he is feeling fresh. When he's tired, he doesn't waste his energy on a play that works 1% of the time. So, well done Pop. You were right. You're still wrong about Bonner, though. Another -5 Matt Bonner.)

4th Quarter 4:17 Spurs 92 Hornets 90
Tim challenges two shots in a row by Ariza and then snatches the board, elbows flying. Again, a symptom of fresh legs, and elbows. +5 Tim

4th Quarter 4:07 Spurs 94 Hornets 90
Tony waits for Tim to play pick and roll basketball. He rubs Jack off of Tim and pulls up for a short jumper, swish. +5 Tony (17 dimes!!!)

4th Quarter 3:45 Spurs 94 Hornets 92
Jack has no where to go. His teammates are all watching this poor play develop; there is no movement. Jack drives into Tim and Tiago and throws up a prayer with 3 seconds on the shot clock. It's blocked by Tim and bounces right to Okafor who nails the 15 footer at the buzzer. Now, how many times has this happened? The Spurs' great defense is negated by an unlucky bounce. Plays like that one hurt me. Seriously. -5 Bad Bounces.

117268_spurs_hornets_basketball_medium

4th Quarter 3:13 Spurs 96 Hornets 92
Tony and Tim execute another pick and roll. This time, Tony takes a long two and misses, as Tim continues to roll to the basket. Duncan times his jump perfectly, catches the ball in midair with his right hand and lays it in. +10 Tim

4th Quarter 2:25 Spurs 98 Hornets 94
Pop has found a play that works and continues to go with it. Tony and Tim, pick and roll basketball. This time the Hornets attempt to trap Tony. He kicks it to Tim who shoots with no hesitation, swish. +5 Tony (His 17th assist!) +10 Tim (A little time off and he's an All-Star once again.)

4th Quarter 1:51 Spurs 100 Hornets 96
The Hornets are keeping pace with the Spurs. They are matching us basket for basket and none of them are easy. Off a nice pass from Danny Green, Tony catches the ball in the paint and hits a floater to extend the Spurs lead back to 4. +2 Danny Green +5 Tony

4th Quarter 1:15 Spurs 102 Hornets 98
After Jarret Jack makes yet another long contested 2, we go to Duncan in the post. He draws the foul and makes both free-throws. +5 Tim Duncan (He does this a few times a game. If the help defender reaches in, he moves the ball up and under their hand so that the defender now has his arm on Tim's. Duncan then goes straight up into his shot, forcing a foul call and giving him the opportunity to get a three point play. It works every time.)

4th Quarter :36 Spurs 102 Hornets 100
Jack makes a nifty move under the basket that made Tim pause just enough so that Jack had room to lay the ball up, cutting the lead to two. The next possession, Tim gets double teamed and turns the ball over. Jack recovers and is off with only Tony to beat. Tony forces him to change direction which allows RJ to disrupt the lay-in attempt. Tiago is there for a big rebound and the Spurs slow things up.

Tony dribbles off some clock as Tiago comes up to set the screen. Tony dibbles left as Tiago dives towards the basket. Tony jumps up to shoot, but dishes to Tiago at the last second. Tiago with a full head of steam goes in for the dunk and is met at the rim by Okafor. Obviously, I'm biased. Let's get that out of the way first. Okay? Done. Now if that wasn't a foul, then what is? Okafor hits him across his arm and there is plenty of body contact. In addition, Okafor's momentum carries him into Tiago with such force that Tiago ends up on his back, under the basket. Even if Okafor gets all ball, don't you whistle a guy for jumping through a shooter? But there's silence from all three refs. In the no-call confusion, Danny Green spots an opportunity and jumps on it. Greensleeves sneaks in and intercepts Belinelli's pass, but it bounces off Danny's foot and rolls out of bounds. +5 Tony +10 Tiago (Even though there was no call, it was a perfectly executed pick and roll. You can't ask for more than that.) +5 Danny "Big" Green (He's everywhere. He really is.)

117308_spurs_hornets_basketball_medium
Yeah, there's nothing to see here. Just move along... Move along now.

4th Quarter :13.6 Spurs 102 Hornets 100
Jack drives the ball into the lane with Green matching him step for step. Tim steps up and challenges the shot along with Danny. Jack misses and as the ball teeters on the rim, Landry tips it in. I guess this is a "spirit of the law, not the letter of the law" type of no-call. The ball was on its way out, but it was still in the cylinder when Landry made contact. It's an offensive goal-tend, just not this time, on this night, in this building (with these refs). [-5 Fred Silva for not taking advantage of a wonderful opportunity to criticize David Stern. Editor's Note. -jrw]

4th Quarter :05.2 Spurs 102 Hornets 102
Danny Green is given in-bounding responsibilities on the left sideline. He passes it to Tim who catches the ball and squares up to the basket. 4 seconds. Okafor is hounding him. He quickly dribbles right but Okafor is there. 3 seconds. Tim is moving laterally along the free-throw line. 2 seconds. Tim picks up his dribble, takes one step into Okafor, takes his second in a slight fade (all while moving left to right across the lane parallel with the basket) and puts up a running one-handed hook shot that's a thing of beauty. It bangs home against the back of the rim and splashes the net: a no-doubter. The Spurs take the lead with 1.4 remaining. +20 Tim

4th Quarter :01.4 Spurs 104 Hornets 102
The Spurs play great defense and the Hornets have no choice but to pass it to Landry 4 feet behind the top of the key. Tiago puts his hands up and the ball falls well short, into Danny Green's lap. Ballgame. Spurs win.

And now, your four, 4th Quarter Stars (as derived by FARS)

4.) Tony Parker: 20 FARS Pts, 20 Points, 17 Assists, and 2 Rebounds in 38 minutes.
Tony played a spectacular game. Had I FARSed the entire game, he would have undoubtedly been one of the top two performers. Tony attacked the paint all night, which is what enabled him to create so many open shots for his teammates.

3.) Danny Green: 32 FARS Pts, 7 Points, 3 Assists, 1 Rebound, 2 Steals and 1 Block in 24 minutes.
Danny can really fill out a box score. Dare I say he's Manu-esque in that category? Danny also posted a game high plus/minus of +14. He's a gamer. Pop capitalized on his court-vision by making him the backup point guard. Pop utilized his overall game by playing him the entire fourth quarter. I love where this is going. Danny has all the makings of the Spurs next big steal. And he obviously responded well to the lightened load of JRW's reduced expectations.

2.) Tiago Splitter: 33 FARS Pts, 12 Points, 6 Rebounds and 1 Steal in 23 minutes.
Tiago and Tim closed this game. They were everywhere in the 4th quarter. They challenged every shot and gobbled up rebounds. It's so nice to have two 7-footers on the floor at the same time. It reminds me of the good old days. Hopefully, Pop will give us the pleasure of seeing these two on the court at the same time more often.

1.) Tim Duncan 55 FARS Pts, 28 Pts, 7 Rebounds, 2 Assists, 1 Steal, and a vintage game-winner.
He never hesitated tonight. Not once. Every time he caught the ball he moved with a purpose. Was this caused by his forced days off? Yes. But perhaps in a different way than you might expect. I think he played angry tonight. The rest gave him legs, but the forced DNP did not sit well with this fiery competitor. He wanted to come out and dominate. He wanted to make the point that he's not too old for this. He can still take over games.

117263_spurs_hornets_basketball_medium
Sublime

Look at that last shot again. Fading away, a one handed hook on the move? That's vintage Tim Duncan. He's still got a little left in the tank, and after being forced to rest, he reminded everyone that he's still TIM DUNCAN.

Message received, Tim. Thank you, sir. May I have another?

Great recap! +100

I like Green at the back up PG spot. He’s the only one in the 2nd unit capable of beating his man off the dribble and penetrating. Offensively, he still needs some polishing, improve finishing near the basket, passing, etc. Defensively, Green is solid enough to disrupt the opponents offensive flow, pressuring their guards.

Plus, if Tiago’s good offensive play continues, the back up PG’s main job would be to bring the ball up the court and dump it into Tiago in the post, something Green can easily do.

Well said. I didn’t see the game, but if Fred’s recap is accurate I’m all for Green as the backup PG until Ford gets back.

Great recap there!

Vintage Tim Duncan indeed!

Amazing recap Fred. I missed the fourth quarter but after reading this it feels like I was at the hive.

Surprise! Surprise! Tim Duncan’s game winner is number 1 in NBA’s Top 10 for Monday night. Check it out!

I finally get why Pop opted for Anderson over Kawhi… The Spurs have to make a decision on picking up his 3rd-year option in the next couple of days. I hope they keep him, but if they don’t, look for De Colo to come over next season.

Spurnando!!!

He’s gone back to playing well this year in Valencia, and his contraqct runs out at the end of the ACB season. I’d look for the Spurs to either trade his rights or sign him at some point in the next 6-8 months.

1.7 this year, 1.8 next year, 1.8 the year after and then 2.9 the 4th. 1.8 to 1.8 seems cheap. Talking about contracts..what about Tim’s new one?

I hope he’ll agree to come back for something around $5M a year. That, plus amnestying RJ would put the Spurs well under the cap, so they could pursue free agents(or at least retain their own) in the summer. Green is going to be a RFA, and if Ford continues playing well after he’s rehabbed, he’ll be more expensive as well.

Hope your right about the 5 but I think outside the team offer fakes will push it to 10.

If RJ keeps shooting like he has (unsustainable— yes, I know) you think there’s any chance they DON’T amnesty him?

Yes, they will keep him, I believe, if the big 3 returns. :)

Yes, I hear the voice in my head telling me i need to finish that article. And it better be spectacular…

Depends on what they can get in FA.

Well if JA is on his way out, it starts to get more interesting.

I noticed that 6’9" Eric Dawson had been the Toros best big averaging 16 points and 10.5 rebs. The Spurs then signed Malcolm Thomas, and shortly thereafter Dawson signed a contract over in Europe. Thomas might be the better prospect over the long run, but if the Spurs aren’t careful they might wind up losing a number of their dleaguers to other teams and Europe. The Toros at the moment only have 8 players on their roster. Dentmon’s having an outstanding season at PG and may be the next one to leave for a better opportunity. Being a bit older and more experienced at 26, I’d think it might be good to give him a shot at some time with the Spurs while letting Cory get some playing time in Austin.

I can appreciate what a difficult task it is to balance everyone’s minutes, but at the moment I don’t think that even Thomas should be getting more than 1 or 2 DNP-CD in a row. I expect his signing may have cost the Toros Dawson, why sign him to have him waste away on the bench. How might he do playing next to Bonner or Blair rather than having the two together if the Spurs were to use more of a Tim and Tiago unit? They can’t find out with Thomas getting no minutes, though it’s certainly hard to tell when trying it might be most appropriate.

Beginning Feb. 6, the active roster goes back to being 12 men. Sooner or later, Manu and TJ will be among those 12. Will Thomas be gone without even having a chance? Cory seems likely to go to the Toros when Ford is back, but the Spurs seem likely to need him to suit up until then unless they pick up some other backup PG. I can’t see letting Anderson go without a real opportunity to be part of the rotation after being such a high draft pick. If they do, they might not have many draft prospects all that anxious to work out for them.

The problem is their money limitations. If they Think Thomas can be big in the long run, they need to keep him around. Granted, he should be in Austin if they can’t give him any time.

As far as Dawson, who knows. Perhaps Spurs are going to keep in contact with him? I’m sure they had a talk with him if the parting was mutual.

Thomas is a few years younger than Dawson and they no doubt saw a good deal of him when scouting Leonard. But if the Spurs want Thomas on the Toros, won’t it only be by having him on an assignment with an NBA contract? If the cut him, would he not be returned to the Los Angeles DLeague club? I’d just think if they wanted to take a look at Thomas then play him a bit more so that you can take a look. I’d think by letting Dawson sit on the Spurs bench for a while might give others incentive to consider the Spurs organization including the Toros. The Toros currently have the best record in the DLeague, but it would seem like if the players feel they’ll not have a shot at a callup they’ll look elsewhere.

I wouldn’t cut Thomas, but I’d make the most of his time and put him in Austin. I’d do the same with Joseph and pick up Ahearn. I think Spurs could benefit, especially in this practice-less season with those youngins in Austin. Perhaps they messed it up with Dawson. Only time will tell. Perhaps they kept a good standing relationship with him and they are in communication with each other?

I’d bet we never see De Colo. He’s just too slow on defense.

When the Spurs drafted Cory Joseph, it seems to me that dropped the likelihood of Nando being the PG of the future.

Nando’s a SG anyway. He’s got Manu’s creative flair and fearlessness(which would make him a good bench player, IMO), but lacks most of the other skills Manu has.

His speed/quickness is a hinder. He’s not the quickest of guards. Who knows, Spurs perhaps might purge their foreign prospects.

I’m very sure Lorbek will be a Spur next year. He probably would have been this year.

Yeah, Lorbek is almost a given at this point. He’s been awesome.

Of the foreign draft picks, the one seeming to be having a decent season besides Lorbek would be Viktor Sanikidze. He would seem to be most likely a SG/SF, a spot where the Spurs are getting a bit overcrowded. He does seem to be playing PF (at 6’7") and is rebounding fairly well. Does he have much of a chance of being a future Spur or even to the NBA?

The one thing though is that there are a lot of question marks at the wings so Viktor might have a chance. That said, the clock on Viktor is ticking, I feel.

Green? Anderson? Neal? I think only Leonard is the sure thing at this point, although it does seem like Green is growing on the Spurs.

I’m excited at the prospect of Bertrans if he can get a bit stronger. Obviously, he’s longer term…

It seems a bit overcrowded to the point that the Spurs can’t tell exactly what they have as they can’t take the time to properly evaluate all of them. That becomes even tougher when Manu and TJ return. I tend to think Neal has the least room for growth and therefore the least future, though he might do the most to help the team to win now. He would likely be the most interesting of the bunch to any potential trade partner, but with his low salary wouldn’t get much back in return unless he’s packaged. Blair won’t add much salary to the package either. Seems likely there won’t be any trades at this point and the Spurs stick with what they have, unless they can get a nice offer for a Neal/Bonner package.

Honestly, I think with Manu and TJ, it gives more defined roles. Pop can hone on their skill sets a bit more. I agree about Neal. I feel like he would be best to package, but McDyess isn’t here any longer and there are not a lot of big contracts.

Bonner/Blair/Neal would be the best chunk, but that’s only in the 4-5 range….

That may not happen this season because that would leave the Spurs with 2 bigs(excluding thomas). This would happen only if we are going to get more than 1 big back.

I don’t think Spurs are trading this season. That deadline is up now with McDyess gone for nothing.

Theres little point in trading now.

Anything big guts the team and the seasons too short to recover.

Anything small is ineffectual.

Awesome I got to use ineffectual again. Good to see you back ineffectual!

I bet you find the opportunity to make this a buska buzz word.

Don’t give up on Nando just yet! He is playing very well for Valencia this season and was the ACB player of the week twice. He is a bit slow but so is Calderon and Navarro. Remember Navarro? If he didn’t choose to return to the comfort of Barcelona the guy would have been a multiple All-Star.
Nando plays good defense, he is already a better spot-up shooter then Manu and he is more than decent facilitator.

We really tend to exaggerate with the NBA level over Europe[Spain in particular]. Just have a look of how many good players have come from the Spanish League.
I think that a top 10 player at the ACB is almost a sure thing to become at least an important rotation player on a good team.

I was noticing stories about the Commissioner needing to make a decision on Eric Gordon’s extension and the T’Wolves on Kevin Love which reminded me that the Spurs would have had to make a decision on George Hill if they hadn’t traded him. When I look at ESPN’s trade machine it shows Anderson as having three years to go; whereas Gordon, Love and Hill are all shown to be in their final year. Error, or is Anderson’s contract not guaranteed and so you’re referring to some guaranty?

I think it’s 3 years + option or something like that. d

So is the deadline to decide whether or not to pick up his option or chance becoming a restricted free agent at the end of 3 years? I take it that today (Wednesday) is the deadline based on some of the other stories.

Since his contract is based on the old CBA, I think they have until the end of his 3rd season to decide whether to pick up the option. At least, that’s what I recall with 1st round draft picks.

So then you don’t think there’s any current deadline?

Not that I know of. I think the deadline for contracts is for guys drafted in 08 like Love, Gallo. The other two, Rose and Westbrook already inked deals.

I think some of that was pushed back due to the lockout.

Duncan in Greens face

There was a moment in last nights game where NO called a timeout after a Duncan made basket and on the way back to the bench, Duncan found Green, grabbed his jersey, got about 3 inches from his face and began to, shall we say, give him some instruction.
Any idea what this was about? I realize it was probably something minor, like a missed rotation or the like, but I like to know this sort of stuff. In any event, I very much liked the way Green responded: other than listen intently, he didn’t. If he were a jackass, he would have shoved Duncan’s hand away and pulled some “get out of my face” crap. I really like Danny Green.

Yes. I am curious about this too. Timmy seemed a bit more animated that usual about how he grabbed Green there quite passionately lol.

Great recap. Recc’ed. Bonner’s backside having a positive over Bonner is so sadly funny.

Seemed like he was upset about the previous defensive possession. Green easily let the ball handler drive right down the center of the court., instead of funneling where they wanted him to go. Puts too much pressure on bigs to step up and have to stop the ball.

I saw that too. I thought about it in the same way Pop met Tony at half court a few games ago and smacked him in the face. I think Duncan’s message was something along the lines of, “See! You got this!” I didn’t think Duncan was correcting anything Green did wrong. But who knows.

Simply a Fredtastic FARS discourse. Completely biased and apprediated.

Ummmmmmm…… anyone else noticing that the rest of the divison (other then NOLA of course) is doing quite well. Im not panicking, but Memphis, Dallas, and Houston are all doing well right now.

Dallas is actually playing better this season with Dirk out? WTH is up with that? Grizz just won 7 in a row!? Houston destroyed the wolves lastnight.

I was hoping for them to have problems right now with Randolph, Dirk being out, but looks like we don’t get any kind of slack with Manu out. We have to continue to throw the pedal down until hes back, which sucks. Oh, and has anyone looked at the dreaded Feb. Schedule yet? Holy crap.

It seems like Dirk playing while hurt may be less effective than having others play in his place. Dirk wasn’t doing all that bad, but his average was down to 17.5 pt and 3 pt% at .235

Be calm and win games one at a time in LWM, we will ;)

For an Aggie, that was pretty wise.

Shhhh, got a reputation to protect here, five-oh! ;)

As bad as Feb is, April’s worse.

Fantastic recap. Given Tim’s reaction to the DNP, I’ll happily take more of them when the schedule requires such.

Who’s this Francisco Oberto, fellow? I hear he can play.

He is the son of Francisco Elson and Fabricio Oberto. No, he cant shoot.

From Grantland

Tim Duncan scored 28 points as the Hornets fell to 1-9 at home in a 104-102 Spurs win. Afterward, while writing in his notebook, he asked reporters if anyone knew a good rhyme for “fiscal solvency.” “Are you writing a rap?” a reporter asked. “Oh, sure,” Duncan replied, “if you consider a sonnet a rap. Maybe we should ask Shakespeare.” Then he giggled to himself for like 20 minutes, because his dog is named Shakespeare.

wrecked and awesome… I like that I am not the only one that calls Danny Green “Greensleeves”

Fred, excellent job. The Matt Bonner ribbing (or ripping) was quite funny. I think this is the type of game that the Spurs have struggled to win without Manu. It was nice to see Green and other step up.

I think Tony Parker’s play is being vastly underrated. He has been playing extremely well of late and that includes making the offense go. 17 assists! The haters are awfully quiet right now.

Tony Parker’s play is often vastly underrated by most. Heck, there are some that still want to trade him…

He’s like the son/daughter that can never please their dad.

Malcolm Thomas MVP ?

Most Valuable Percher?

And here is a good reason why I think RJ is different.

Tony forces him to change direction which allows RJ to disrupt the lay-in attempt. Tiago is there for a big rebound and the Spurs slow things up.

Defense got back and RJ was a big part of that.

I think that’s also played a large part in him still playing close out minutes even if he’s shooting like poo.

Grant Hill is becoming the Brett Farve of the NBA, without the rings or MVP trophies.

Unfortunately, he was hit hard by injuries unlike Farve. That and he’s a much better person than Farve, as it seems.

Out indefinitely.

Big blow to Chicago. That’ll change the east a tad more.

Yikes. Hope he gets back soon.

I watched the game this morning but barely payed attention since I’m at work so I didn’t notice a lot of things like:

1. When did Tony get all those assists?
2. Where was Kawhi?

I did see some interesting things though:

1. Timmy played with energy
2. I liked RJ first quarter. He made 2 3pts then, faked a couple shots then took the closer one and made it.

He had 6 assists in the early part of the 1st quarter on most of Tim’s or RJ’s baskets. He also was a big part of Tiago. They had a good 2-man thing running. It was like Timmy Pt. 2

JA took Kawhi ‘s minutes. He’s had trouble getting around screens on D. Also, his shot is not consistent. That and he’s a rookie so he’s prone to the ups and downs, especially with all the big minutes .

If you show excitement, then you also may show disappointment or frustration. If your opponent picks up on this frustration, you are at a disadvantage." Tim Duncan

Awesome recap

I didn’t get to watch the game so thank you so much for this!

No problem. I’m glad that you, and everyone else who commented, enjoyed it.

Thanks for this amazing recap Fred. Enjoyed every word of it. In particular:

Pop also put Tim back into the game for Bonner. It’s Tiago and Tim! Thank you, Pop. We’ve only been waiting 100+ games for this moment. -10 Pop. (This should have happened 100 games ago.)

Truer words have never been spoken.

Okay, I’m one of the people that was bashing Pop for resting Tim the last two games. Honestly, I was more upset that he benched Tim in the fourth quarter of the winnable Kings game, but I definitely was not pleased with the loss in Houston.

I was one of the vociferous bunch who shared your opinion. And Pop seems to have made me eat my words. But when you look at the larger picture, Tim Duncan was scorching throughout this game, and we played Tiago in the fourth alongside Duncan, and Tony Parker almost posted a 20 and 20 game, yet, this was against a hapless Hornets squad which we should’ve handily beaten, yet we managed to let them score a season high, only beat them by 2, and they were without their best player Eric Gordon. Yes we were without Manu, and Ford, but, ugh… I’ll take the victory though. And take this recap, which rocks.

New Orleans is a good defensive team, and they were hot against us. I thought escaping with the win was pretty good. They hit a lot of tough shots. Normally that results in a Spurs loss.

Jack is really good this year. He’s one of the lone good stories in New Orleans at the moment. Good fantasy player as well.

and they were hot against us

Unlike all those other teams we played…..

Dallas was the anti-hot being on 6 games in 8 nights

I’m not sure if it’s been mentioned here, but the Express-News is saying that Tony has been playing with a sore back since the Milwaukee game nearly two weeks ago. They even mentioned that at one point when he came out of the game that he stood rather than sit down and have his back tighten on him. It was referred to as inflammation of his lower back. Seems Pop might have wanted to have him sit out the Houston game as well, but feels that Tony has been carrying the team and he has little choice.

Man, you beat me to it, Alamo—was just about to link that Buck Harvey article. TP is a warrior.

We don’t need warriors. Trade him.

lol I love party lines :) Trade Frenchie!!!!

In the one game after the half time break he came out with his back wrapped in a huge ace bandage and what looked like ice in it. I kind of guessed he was a little banged up for that game but not for as long as he has been. People need to give Frenchie some respect

My fav was the end all around. I kept tuning in & out & studying last night feeling fear of disappointment & even putting the Bachelor on my sched last night for distraction. What a Duncan !!! Sweet end:)

LeBron James leads the league in FG% from inside 5 feet. He’s 81-for-108 (75.0%). Next is Tiago Splitter: 52-for-70 (74.3%).

Tiago has been ballin’!!!!!

Yep, hopefully he can keep it up with a larger sample size.

Great recap, Fred!

+ 100 for Fred for doing a wonderful job.

Timmy looked really good and spry on that game winner. Wow.

I expect an enjoyable Bonner bashing with FARS recaps and every single time it delivers. Great great description of how that 4th quarter went down, too.

Amen. Even though I don’t share Fred’s Bonner-hate, his recaps wouldn’t be half as fun without it.

Just for entertainment value, Fred, can you give us the 2nd 0:36 paragraph and FARS score as if it had been Bonner getting stuffed at the rim by Okafor instead of Tiago?

I thought about this and it’s impossible. First, Bonner would not have set a sold screen in order to free Parker. He would have slipped the screen and popped out to the 3 point line, where hopefully he would have been covered, (because we all know he’s not making a clutch shot.) If, by some miracle, he did cut to the basket as Tiago did, there’s no way he would have gone for the dunk. He would have caught the ball, taken a dribble, picked it up, and looked for help. He sucks. -10 for you, doggydogworld, for making me think about Bonner for 30 seconds. I want those 30 seconds back.

Im glad he did. +10 to doggy for making you think about Bonner.

I like that it all nets out to zero for doggy.

It’s amazing how Pop sometimes sees exactly what I do, and then there’s Matt Bonner.

It could have been a great rec-worthy recap, if not for another portion of tiring Bonner-centered hatred. Oh, well, nobody is perfect.
