Game Preview: San Antonio Spurs vs. Sacramento Kings

San Antonio Spurs vs Sacramento Kings

AT&T Center
January 20, 7:30 PM Spurs Time
TV: Fox Sports Southwest, NBA League Pass - RADIO: WOAI

The monkey is finally off their backs! The San Antonio Spurs return home with their first road victory of the season against the Orlando Magic. This was a big moral victory for the team, that is very young outside of Duncan, Parker, Bonner and RJ. Although road games will always be tougher, especially in LWM, the victory gives the young players some relief from the pressures of being the only +.500 team to not have a road victory.

After two difficult road games in Flordia, The Spurs (10-5) prepare to face the Keith Smart led Sacramento Kings team
(5-10) with their brand of young, athletic and inexperienced play. You never know what to expect with them.

Star-divide

The Sacramento Kings arrive in San Antonio following an impressive comeback victory (92-88), where they outscored Georgie's Indiana Pacers 26-8 in the forth quarter.

Spurs come back home with a classic-Spurs style victory, grinding out a victory, despite the game being super ugly. They were led by Tony Parker, who was on fire in the 4th quarter, scoring 14 of his 25 points to lead the way.

After two difficult games, Spurs get a little treat with the Kings. They lack the experience and consistency to win at that next level, but are always potentially dangerous if you do not take care of the ball.

Pop should have the opportunity to rest his older players and focus on teaching the younger guys how to play within the system. Additionally, this game can serve as a way for players, such as James Anderson to work his way into a routine that breaks him back into the rotation.

However, with each and every game in this shortened season, you never really know what to expect. Although the Spurs only recently pulled off their first road win, as of January 18th, only two teams in the western conference have more than 2 road wins (Denver at 4-3 and OKC at 6-2).

Looking at the team at the moment, there are some items to be happy with and some items that could use some work.

Positives:

  • Parker, looking good, especially taking over games when Spurs need help. 21.7 ppg and 7.7 apg in the last 6 games
  • Although there will be times where he looks like a rookie, Leonard's growth is a neat thing to watch. Enough said.
  • Green continues to demonstrate why Ferry (who picked him at Cleveland) was eager to sign him
  • Splitter continues to look more comfortable
  • Blair has been playing more balanced games
  • Although Neal is struggling with conditioning, he still can make clutch shots
  • Joseph has received time, spelling Parker for important minutes, while also showing off of promise
  • Although RJ hasn't shot well from beyond the arc, he is not giving up as easily and still contributing. This is something to continue to watch out for.

Negatives/Key Questions:

  • Green's foul on Wafer. Occasionally, Green's defense goes off course. Hopefully the Spurs coaching staff is working on those aspects. Green was quick enough to get back to Reddick, but was caught watching the play, moments before.
  • Spurs not adjusting their offense enough. Once Magic adjusted for Parker's penetration, the game became more difficult as no one else could buy a bucket in that forth quarter.
  • Splitter needs to learn how to avoid fouling. It is removing him from games at various moments.
  • Leonard's first subpar game since starting. How will he respond now that expectations have grown?
  • Neal's conditioning is effecting his long distance jump shot
  • RJ and Bonner are in a shooting slump. Will home cooking and a night off get them back on track?
  • James Anderson is suffering on the bench, especially with lack of practice. If not for the Manu and Ford injuries, he might be in Austin. Will he play?

In order to win, the Spurs must...

  • Get back on transition D
  • Limit turnovers, but make smart passes to increase ball movement
  • Take open shots and avoid playing one-on-one basketball.
  • Rebound the ball. Although the Kings shot 30% from the field, they had 30 offensive rebounds against the Pacers
  • Win the game early. Put away the young team to avoid giving them opportunities to pull the game out in their favor.

As always Tony must dominate Fisher, and NBA league pass is recommended for those who are willing to pony up the cash. Almost every Spurs game will be broadcast there, which is especially helpful for those of us who aren't in the San Antonio area. Please don't post links to illegal game feeds in the game thread. Links to illegal feeds are not permitted on SBNation, but you can probably find them out there on the internets if you're resourceful and desperate.

RJ and backup PG

On RJ, he will do good as long as he thinks he is a Spur. That’s the reason he performed well earlier in the season, when he said “I’m still a Spur.”. That kind of mentality brings focus to the “team” concept, so that he stays aggressive and just contribute for the team, whether rebounding, blocking shots, assists, etc., not necessarily points.
On backup PG, I think whoever is the ballhandler passes the ball to an open man, but that open man is not ready to make a move, whether to shoot or drive to the basket. He’s just open but not ready, so when his guard catches up, he just passes the ball.

new here aren’t you? Welcome!

If you watched the Magic game, the reason the Spurs weren’t ready to do anything with the ball other than pass is because they weren’t getting good passes. They weren’t getting the ball where they want it, I saw a lot of sloppy passes from TP, he’s lucky his teammates were even getting them.

poll

I voted Mavs on the “which team do you want to lose tonight” just so we come up on top of the SW division and assure us of a playoff spot. I still want to see them in the playoffs though.

oh man, I’m missing the game tomorrow! Gotta go out to meet someone. I’ve been trying to watch all the Spurs game this season, online, missed 5 now. Anyway, hope we win! See you guys in the next game!

5 games is one third of all games! I only missed one game completely (against Denver) so far, though I missed also some parts of other games.

This will be a fun game tonight. I think Leonard will be able to shut down Thornton, since he’s not a quick guard, which would be his only advantage. Aside from Manu, Leonard is quickly becoming my favorite player . . . but don’t worry, y’all won’t have to worry about me trading him any time soon.

GO SPURS GO!

SPUUUUURS TONIIIIIGHT!!!…

I am calling it, the first Tarp of the season. The Spurs have EVERY reason to win this game. They are rested, at home where they are undefeated, against an inferior oppenent. Thus, I have calculated this game to have a 77.601% probability of being a Tarp.

It is a very big Tarp game, especially with their confidence flying high after coming back against Indy. The good news is the team is young and plays better at home. So hopefully Pop angles the team towards short minutes for the starters, so that the youngins who just want to prove themselves get time.

yes, I worry about it being a Tarp game as well. hopefully, our youngsters are still hungry and won’t miss the opportunity to prove themselves. GSG!

I think Leonard and RJ will have good games. I predict Bonner will make two 3pters as well. Green will also make 2 threes!

GOL to infinity and beyond!

Oh, and GSG!!!!!

So Dallas is the 3rd team in the west to 3 road wins…

also…. why is Splitter listed as a starter and bench player tonight?

Super Sparkles? or the Clone of Twilight?

Ahh dang it. It didn’t save my settings. I’ll fix that.

Oooooooooooooooo, there are two Sparkles?

I don’t know if I could stand it.

Just wear shades…

Let’s do this!

Oh, wait. Yes, please. jes jes jes

I was trying to give the Spurs another legit big man through my voodoo powers.

Nice work grego. I’d like to see the Spurs come out and put this thing to bed early. With the Rockets looming tomorrow night, it’d be nice for Duncan, Parker and RJ to get some rest. I do agree it could be a trap game, but I think with the shooting ability of the Kings the Spurs have a nice shot to put this away quickly.

Yes, their shooting leaves a lot to be desired, but they did pull down 30 offensive rebounds on the Pacers….

Got to pound the glass.

Bench, impress me.

They are at home. Yay!

Good to have them back home, Go Spurs Go!

Maybe this will have a bizarre effect. Maybe after we lose tonight ( since the game is obviously a tarp) we will go on to win two straight road games.

Don’t count your luck on that. Most teams are not winning on the road, this season.

Actually, just about every other contender has more road wins than San Antonio.

Mavs just scored their 3rd road victory. Only Denver and OKC have more than 3 road wins in the west.

I can’t count East the same way. Knicks, Cleveland have 7-road wins combined.

Face it man, we suck on the road. But there is plenty of time left for improvement.

I’m not saying their “good on the road, but their games don’t show it.” However, I am saying, the road woes are not soley a Spurs thing. In the west, with this schedule, its tough to buy a win.

Only OKC and Denver are really good. All 3 have experience. Dallas is old and experienced. OKC and Denver have young athletic experience.

All other young/athletic teams are mostly meh.

I hope everyone watches this video clip. Classic.

The wookie one, the favorite mine is.

No Yoda dog, whats up with that!?

I think the chihuahua could pass as Yoda. He’s small, and has pointed ears, lol.

Ha! That’s hilarious!

Spurs win big. I live in Sacramento and have seen the Kings play this year, they don’t play well on the road and they are the worst shooting team I’ve seen in a long time.

Is Jimmer turning into a bust already? I was noticing that Leonard outshoots him from 3 point range .318 to .278; and has an EFF rate of 10.87 compared to 4.2 for Jimmer. Hopefully stats don’t tell the whole story, as Anderson would be an even bigger bust while his main problem may be simply a lack of playing time.

JJ Reddick started off slow but has made a decent career for himself. I would argue he has higher odds though.

I’m always scared of games like this. I hope it will be early blowout so we can rest our guys.

I just watched ‘Spurs 2005 championship video’ and, well.. I miss that Timmy.. I still love him, but in some games it’s hard to watch. I hope that BigFun will get his ‘old’ form back and especially his consistency.

By the way, why Timmy doesn’t get respect he deserves. I know that he is not popular, flashy. I know that most people think he is boring. . But week or two ago on nba.com was that stupid discussion – "Tiimmy or Rubio, all-star game’. (And I know that Timmy doesn’t care) Are you kiddin’ me? Rubio? Who the hell is he that he is in the same sentence with Timmy? That was just too much for me, I had to write it somewhere. Feel better now. ;)

Sorry for my english, I’m not sleeping much lately. (exams. dammit.)
