Game Recap: Spurs Survive Dwight Howard and the Magic, get First Road Win

After a brutal loss against Miami, the Spurs finally got a road win but they sure had to fight for it. Playing their second game of a back-to-back against a Magic team on their third game in three nights and missing Hedo Turkoglu, the Spurs were able to outlast the home team en route to an 85-83 overtime win. Both teams seemed exhausted in the first quarter but somehow managed to conjure enough strength to play 53 minutes of ugly but intense basketball. Tony Parker led all players with 25 points and Dwight Howard had a monster game with 24 points and 25 rebounds. Quarter-by-quarter analysis after the jump.

Star-divide

First Quarter

The Spurs started the game slowly and allowed the Magic to jump to an early lead, based on good offensive rebounding. Both Blair and Duncan struggled to box out Dwight Howard, which resulted in the Magic's Center dominating the glass with 10 first quarter rebounds, 4 of which were offensive.

The Spurs didn't seem to find their footing offensively either throughout the quarter, partially because of Orlando's good job of closing out on shooters (only 2 3-point attempts by the Spurs in the quarter) and partially because of tired legs. Tony Parker in particular seemed both mentally and physically exhausted to start the game, missing his first three shots and being replaced by Cory Joseph with 5:09 minutes to go. Only 13 points for the Spurs on the first, which was not surprising considering the lack of ball movement and Parker's ineffectiveness.

Second Quarter

After finishing the 1st down by 6 and not looking particularly sharp, it looked like the Spurs were going to be fighting from behind the whole night. Bad shooting nights from the Magic's snipers and the impressive play from DeJuan Blair and especially Tiago Splitter helped keep Orlando from building a bigger lead. Splitter showed off some of his post moves and Blair kept attacking Ryan Anderson (AKA Matt Bonner 3.0) on the block. Together they combined for 16 of the Spurs' 37 points and 10 of the team's 18 boards.

Coach Pop deserves some credit too for getting creative in this quarter and trotting out a small ball lineup that upped the defensive intensity of the squad and would go on to be the key to winning the game. After two quarters of ugly offense (Spurs FG% was.405 and Magic's was .349), the Spurs trailed only by 3 (24-21) in spite of having allowed 10 offensive rebounds and losing the rebound battle by 12.

Third Quarter

With Tony Parker still struggling from the field and Richard Jefferson pulling a disappearing act, it was on Tim Duncan's shoulders to right the ship. Big Fun started going at Howard aggressively on offense which seemed to bother the Magic's center but didn't stop him from getting his on offense (10 3rd quarter points). Duncan's 8 3rd quarter points coupled with good team defense and better ball movement were enough for the Spurs to hang around and get a chance to win it in the 4th.

After resting for a while, Tony Parker started to show signs of what he was going to do later on, with 2 assists and 3 points in the last 3 minutes of the quarter. The Spurs went into the 4th down only 1 point despite not playing particularly well. It was clear that both teams were tired from the grueling schedule.

Fourth Quarter

The majority of this quarter was The Tony Parker Show. The Wee Frenchman was the Spurs offense for long stretches and single-handedly got the Spurs the lead. Tony scored 14 of the team's 16 points to start the quarter with the other two coming from a Bonner layup assisted by him. His play in the 4th more than made up for his struggles earlier. When his jumper is falling, Tony becomes nearly unstoppable.

Unfortunately, late game execution doesn't seem to be this team's strong suit and after back-to-back turnovers, Reddick tied the game at 73 with 4 consecutive points.
Duncan answered with a hook shot to give the Spurs back the lead but Reddick drew another foul and tied the game again. After a missed Tony Parker jumper, the game went to overtime. It seemed like the Spurs had squandered their chance and Orlando was going to take this one.

Overtime

The OT was weird. Parker and Reddick traded baskets, followed by a Jefferson runner and a jump shot by Duncan, timely answered with two monster put-back dunks by Howard. It seemed like neither team had the strength to get a decisive lead, until Gary Neal hit a dagger three with 28.2 seconds to go. The Spurs were 1-16 from 3 at the time and Neal was 0-4 himself from deep. But as we've learned, The Nail thrives under pressure.

It was looking good for the Spurs who were up by 3, but Danny Green, in a moment of stupidity, fouled Von Wafer when he was driving for a layup. Wafer hit the layup and got the And-1 call. It seemed like we were destined to go to a second OT but Wafer missed the free throw and Kawhi Leonard was able to secure the rebound and call for a timeout. Jefferson was fouled on the inbound play (which almost resulted in another costly turnover) and hit one of two from the line. Ryan Anderson missed the game-winning 3 and the Spurs had won their first game in the road.

Random thoughts:

  • Kawhi Leonard and Danny Green took turns guarding Jameer Nelson for the majority of the game and the results were great. Nelson was 2-16 from the field and was a non-factor. I'm sure some of that has to do with exhaustion, but still. It also allowed Tony Parker to save his strength, so I wouldn't be surprised if we see this more often.
  • The Spurs went small in the second and would go on to play with only one big man for almost all of the 4th quarter and overtime. It worked because it allowed the team to rotate faster after double-teaming Howard and switch without creating mismatches.
  • Pop went to a zone defense at times. We haven't seen much of it this season from the Spurs but I think it's a good weapon to have on your arsenal.
  • I was surprised by the DNP-CD for James Anderson considering the shooting woes of both Neal (1-5) and Green (0-5). Pop seems to be valuing defense above all. Can't say I disagree.
  • The Spurs were lucky Ryan Anderson (this year's MIP?) missed open shots from 3. Anderson boasts a 3pt % of 42.9. He was 1-6 from deep tonight. Again, tired legs.
  • Dwight Howard had 24 points in 15 shots and 25 rebounds (9 off), but it wasn't enough. Except for Wafer, Reddick and Anderson, the Magic role players didn't have a good game.
  • Pop was smart with his Hack-a-Howard strategy. The Spurs fouled him with less than a minute to go in the second quarter. Howard missed 1 of 2 in both trips to the line. Then they fouled him in the 3rd quarter and he hit both free throws. They wouldn't foul him a second time.
  • Larry Hughes is still an NBA player for some reason.
  • Danny Green plays good, aggressive help defense. He was only credited for 1 block, but he probably got his hands on at least one more shot, in addition to saving the game by delaying JJ Redick's three-point attempt that would have saved the game if it had been before the buzzer.
  • If you need a reason to believe RJ is not the same guy he was for the last two seasons, look no further: he played PF for stretches last night without looking out of place, confused or disinterested.

Three Stars

3 - Tiago Splitter. Sparkles helped keep the team alive in the second quarter and keeps showing improvement on offense. 10 points and 6 boards for him in only 18 minutes.

2 - Tim Duncan. Timmy looked tired at times but picked up the slack in the 3rd, going toe-to-toe with Howard and showing leadership after a bad loss. 17 points and 10 boards for Big Fun.

3 - Tony Parker. Tony struggle early but came through when he was most needed and gave a fantastic 4th quarter performance. The Spurs would not have won this one without Tony. 25 points 9 assists and 7 boards for him.

It wasn't pretty but the Spurs have finally won on the road. I wouldn't make much of this game considering the Magic were playing their third game in three nights, but you can only play the teams they put in front of you and after the debacle in Miami the team needed a win.
Up next, the Kings on Friday. Let's get a streak going.

And the Clippers’ Billups hit a game winning basket to beat the Clippers! Great night for all!

Um… wha-… I don’t even…

I accidentally a team.

Lol

Yeah this was the cherry on top of a good night.

And OKC lost. To the Wizards. That’s the kind of loss that, when they’re NBA Champions, if it is ever looked back on, just a big WTF. Crazy game.

Compressed schedule season, does some weird things.

Can’t say I exactly enjoyed the recap, any reliving of this stressful game not a lot of fun. : )
But anyway, good recap, helped me understand a lot better how the game went,
since I had just been following the game from the box score.

Mostly just feel relieved to have this monkey off our back.

Not a good win, you could say, but I’ll take it.

Monkey is off the Spurs back. In the Spurs defense, no team has more than 2 road wins in the West aside from OKC (6-2, who just lost to Wiz on the road tonight) and Denver (4-3). Both teams have experience, but are super young. what a suprise.

This win should help give confidence to the youngins.

After resting for a while, Tony Parker started to show signs of what he was going to do later on, with 2 assists and 3 points in the last 3 minutes of the quarter.

Joseph, although nothing special, played an important stretch in the 2nd and 3rd which helped Parker, it seems regain his legs. I’m glad Pop’s not running Neal as the backup any longer.

the other three coming from a Bonner 3-pointer assisted by him.

Bonner had two 2-pters. One after a Duncan air ball as the shot clock was running out. The other was a layup that (I think Green) hit him with as the weakside defense was missing.

I was surprised by the DNP-CD for James Anderson considering the shooting woes of both Neal (1-5) and Green (0-5). Pop seems to be valuing defense above all. Can’t say I disagree.

I don’t agree. Neal was in for an offensive spark. Otherwise, Leonard would have played the OT with Green. Leonard came in for the offensive to defense substitution though. I’d also argue, on defense, Anderson is a safer bet. That said, Pop decided wisely as Neal hit the key shot.

Fixed. Thanks. It was a layup but it was assisted by Parker.

I think Anderson is in the doghouse, folks. Can’t even leave the bench in a back-to-back situation with Manu hurt.

I’m not sure how he can be. I think struggle + guys ahead of him playing well.

If he didn’t get off the bench in this one, with Green shooting 0-5, he’s definitely in the doghouse. Maybe he’ll get minutes if Pop rests RJ (unlikely).

Looking at the minutes though, Pop seems to be riding his main guys, although Leonard had his first subpar game. Tiago played a little less than 18.

Yes, this includes OT, but
RJ 37.5
TD 35.5
Neal 22 (a lot for him at this stage)
Parker 43

He’s possibly in the dog house, but without practice, it’s tough for Anderson to make a move, I feel.

I think the Kings game will be a good game to see if he is in the dog house. This game should be a lot easier to have a favorable outcome without pushing the core guys too much.

I have a feeling he’s in the doghouse for something other than what goes on on the court, more of a disciplinary issue. Someone mentioned his girlfriend/fiancees tweets complaining about his lack of playing time and how he’d be better off with another team. Could be he made some complaint himself or she’s been a real nag about it and Pop is showing who’s in charge. I don’t think it’s made much of a difference yet and I hope whatever it is is resolved. I still like his potential, he can’t show much from the bench.

I saw the screen shots of them. Perhaps. At least, with Anderson, it doesn’t seem like he’d be one to complain. Although based on those tweets, i can see how she might be the annoying one in the relationship.

I would say, his game fell off quick. Even though he wasn’t hitting shots in the preseason and the first 1 or 2 regular season games, he looked good, making the right decisions and was aggressive. Then that fell off as well.

I make Pop love me.

Look eento mine eyes. Jes! i have you now.

Sparkles looks more and more confident thanks, no doubt, to your massages.

I got magic hands, Kondy. :P

Rec’d, every time i see you calling Splitter , Sparkles, i crack up. Nice to see our Spurs finally get a road win! Go Spurs Go!!

Thanks. And welcome to PTR!

Nice game, I just finished watching it. Looked like an old-fashioned ugly Spurs win.

Tiago should play a lot more minutes. There’s no reason to keep him in the bench.

Well, in some games, he just got in bad foul trouble, but I foresee him logging good minutes against Sac town, as Pop hopes that he can sit Parker and Duncan for most of the game.

Bonner is playing more than him, that can’t happen, Tiago is becoming quite the post player

Bonner plays with Tiago or Duncan in the game. Same with Blair. Usually Tiago/Duncan don’t see time together.

foul trouble? what foul trouble? He is playing 15-20 minutes a game. And what if he reaches 6 fouls and gets tossed? He is playing 15-20 minutes anyway.
Two quick fouls on Duncan is one thing. Against tough teams he plays lots of minutes and we need him at the end. But tiago? If he has 2, 3 or 4 fouls……keep him on the court dammit.

That’s how Pop has treated it. Depending on how quickly Tiago’s fouls have occurred. Not all of it is foul trouble. He’s been playing Duncan more minutes, as seen recently. Miami was a game where he was taken out by foul troubles.

The quick fouls seem to matter though as Pop seems to not want to put Tiago in closer games as often if Tiago didn’t have a lot of burn earlier, electing to go with more Duncan or smaller ball.

We will see how it progresses as the season goes along.

I liked when Tiago and Duncan played together. The Spurs defense and rebounding improves A LOT, and Timmy can play the 4 on offense, where his shot has been money. In my mind, the spurs should use a 3 man rotation of Blair, timmy and tiago. But well, im not the coach of the san antonio spurs.

I feel like Pop hesitates with playing Duncan with Tiago because he wants to avoid Blair/Bonner. At least, his thinking is not all flawed when he does that.

It’s like, Duncan/McDyess was a better lineup than Duncan/Blair, but then the second unit became highly unstable.

I’m not sure what’s the good answer. Closing the game, I really can’t complain too much about the bigger small ball. Duncan/Parker/RJ/Green/Leonard.

In this game, Pop went with Duncan and being small. And it worked with Leonard, until he took him out for Neal, especially during OT.

They wanted Neal in for an offensive threat and it worked out. Tiago does need more time out there and he does look more comfortable offensively speaking. Leonard plays some pesky defense, I like him for that, he has a lot of potential.

Haha where did the nickname sparkles come from?

Some think Tiago bears a passing resemblance to Edward Cullen from Twilight lol.

hahahaha I see it. lol

Well kiss a frog. Ugly is as ugly does.

Spurs Win!!!

Great to have a win after that ‘game we won’t talk about’ yesterday.

I’m feeling happy at the contributions from all of our players. I think the squad has a better balance on the wings, with other three-point options, so Bonner doesn’t have to play big minutes. RJ has been playing well, really hope that’s a permanent thing. Kawhi is developing into a defensive menace, and can contribute of offense and rebounding.

{Sips more Tea-of-Eternal-Optimism}

Yay Spurs!!

The Game That Must Not Be Mentioned

Pop did as per AP on Yahoo: “They were aggressive, they were physical and more than anything, they just played through whatever was going to happen on the court. They didn’t worry about the last play..Just mental toughness that they showed after not showing it last night, that was very satisfying for the whole group.”

Heres to the popping of our road-win-cherry. Featured here is my favorite mixed drink, a vodka press (Vodka with one part lime soda, one part seltzer water. Not too sweet and very refreshing. Cheers.

Nice. I’m going to have to try that.

That’s a fine recap, Edg5. Excellent summary and pinpoint analysis.

RJ needs TJ.
It’s like I said, in my recap of the season opener.
Just you wait.

Well, a lot of players need TJ. I don’t think TJ would make RJ’s shot go in. But that is life. Sometimes they don’t drop.

RJ was making 50% of his three and TJ was great at getting to the basket and kicking it out to RJ. We need he’s play making abilities in are second unit. Getting he is probably the most underated move this year.

Well, a lot of guys were getting more things with TJ there. Obviously, with Manu and TJ out, it’s more of a struggle. However, RJ has been missing a lot of open shots, he was making earlier in the season. Although a decent amount were halfway in, they still count as misses. I feel like the schedule is partly to blame for RJ’s fall off.

However, I also agree that TJ was a super underrated move and I was excited about it once I saw the headlines.

Nice work Edg5. Hard fought wins are often time better learning experiences than the blow out type of wins. It will be interesting to see how the Spurs respond to another set of B2B’s this weekend.

Pittman is back. Watch out Los Angeles!

I don’t care what may or may not have allegedly happened a few nights ago, accoding to some close sources. I want Miami to destroy LA tonight. It’s the least they could do to help our guys out.

Eddy Curry could make his official debut tonight too. Pittman-Curry>Gasol-Bynum, obviously

No one can stop the Curry Pitbull one-two punch.

Some things I should have mentioned on the recap:

*Danny Green plays good, aggressive help defense. He was only credited for 1 block, but he probably got his hands on at least another shot.

*If you need a reason to believe RJ is not the same guy he was for the last two seasons, look no further: he played PF for stretches last night without looking out of place, confused or disinterested.

Agreed.

To me, the clutch shot, driving to the basket (when his shot wasn’t working), taking the better shot the defense gave him.

Why can’t he do that more often?

That I would like to know. He is hitting more 2-pt jumpers off the quick screen. I do like that the team is running that more this year.

Did y’all notice Richard’s reaction at the end of overtime where Redick takes the shot at the top of key? He turns away once he sees Reddick taking the shot and clenches his fists as if he knows the shot is going in. Once he realizes it was after the buzzer, he pumps his fists in celebration/relief. Even though his game was off, I like seeing that kind of emotional involvement from him.

Box score watching, I thought he was having another terrible game like the game the night before which may or may not have occurred.

Good to hear more detail like this. Gives me hope that he isn’t regressing like I was afraid he might.

Even though he’s missing, he’s still taking the shots with pretty good confidence.

I’d like to think the coaching staff sort of discouraged him a bit. If you remember last year, RJ driving to the basket almost always ended up in an offensive foul.

I disagree, only 1 rebound in 38 minutes in a game that had 2 struggling offenses

With Howard in the game, not going to happen as far as rebounds go. I point to Leonard as an example of how difficult it was. The big difference between this one and previous games, he started was Howard in the middle (60-41 rebounding edge).

There were a lot of long rebounds, if Howard did not get them. This is why Parker had 7 rebounds. Only Duncan had 3 more defensive rebounds.

Im sorry to say this, but I still dont get why everyone is so high on Jefferson. He is quickly becoming the new Michael Finley…..neutral defense at best, incredible spot up shooting and NOTHING else. I thought we were getting a shot creator, an active defensive player, a guy who could run on the fast break and finish, a guy who could get to the line anytime we needed something. He is just Michael Finley 2.0. I couldnt be more dissapointed. I dont care if he shoots 100% from the corners as a spot up shooter, in the playoofs he will get 2 or 3 looks like that per game. YAY! 6 points for the game!! Well done Michael

RJ was never a shot creator. Nor was he ever above average defender (but definitely better than Finley). He was athletic, knew how to run the break. Could have the occasional 20-30 pt game, but I don’t know why anyone thought differently. He drives less, but that’s pretty much the only difference. Only time will tells how many shots he gets in the post season.

He’s lost some athleticism and gained a consistent shot, but there really hasn’t been an evolution or de-evolution. He’s had hops, but never had super big hands (like a Leonard or Hill) or long arms.

Is he overpaid? Yes, he’s always been for a slightly above the average player, but market value did pay him well at times.

He could always get to the line a lot. And from time to time, he will do it and it works. I dont get why he plays like michael finley most of the time. He is better than that, and that pisses me off.
Anyways, my point is that I never understood why he is getting so much praise by everybody around here. He is shooting and making wide open 3 pointers and that’s it. Even last season he had a stronger start, he even averaged like 20 ppg the first 10 games or so. We are headed the same path as last year. I dont see ANY difference.
Stop praising him, that’s my point. He is invisible most of the game.

I think the team doesn’t want him doing it as much. I highly doubt he’s not listening to the team. He’s not the best dribbler, so I feel like he has better odds of getting a better shot up if he does not dribble as much. I do think he’s improved his ball handling since he’s been with the Spurs.

As far as attacking the basket, I hope he does mix it in more, especially if he shoots above 45% from the line.

As far as praise, I think he gets it because he gets bagged on much more than he deserves too. Probably both sides of the extreme.

Great job on this, Edg. A weird game to recap, but you did an excellent job.

Also, you were the first road recapper to get a win!

So he needs to now do every road game, until they lose. Otherwise, he’s banned!

Thanks for volunteering him.

Done!

+1 for recapping of road wins

Wonder how that would be scored on FARS?

Weird game indeed. I’m going to take full credit for this win. The Spurs are 2-0 when I recap. Coincidence? I think not.

So you need to do all the recaps, it seems… Not just road games.

Um, let’s not get ahead of ourselves, greg. The Spurs are undefeated in the games Matthew recaps too.

Oh, we have depth!!! Yes, hopefully neither sprain an ankle or anything…

Oh sweet, I’m 2-0 on my previews. Hopefully 3-0 after tomorrow. :)

Depth. That’s funny.

Good recap, Edg. I’m just about ready to watch the replay in a few hours. Also, I’m guessing Tiago’s conditioning is also not up to speed yet that’s why he’s not playing as much. But I could be very wrong.
