These are interesting days to be a Spurs fan, people. What with the compressed season, dealing with injuries like just about every other NBA squad, a youth movement, and various members of the Big Three giving us stunning reprises of their glorious prime selves, this is by no means boring. The season has been full of surprises so far, which is perhaps what we should have expected for the season that almost wasn't. Tonight the boys in black roll into Miami, and face a dangerous Heat team that is the odds on favorite to win it all this season, only right now they are not exactly dominating the competition. The Heat have an injury bug themselves, and have (Surprise!) lost three straight games. What gives?

Well I am not going to waste tears on the Heat. Two of those recent losses went to overtime, and the third was at altitude in Denver. They have been resting for three days now, have probably the most dominant single player in the league, and are surely starving for a beat-down victory over an opponent that has yet to win on the road this season. The Spurs will have their hands full tonight.
The Heat are right up there with the Spurs in terms of quality offense, with both teams near the top of the league in points and assists. Miami is averaging six more points per game than the Spurs. On the defensive end, San Antonio is giving up about 95 points per game, 16th place in the league. Miami is in 26th place in the same category, with opponents scoring 99 points per contest. Both the 9-4 Spurs and the 8-4 Heat are enjoying a margin of victory of over five points a contest. But if you look at opponents' shooting percentage, one of Pop's favorite measuring sticks, the Heat are averaging a very good 42.6%, while the Spurs are still trying to climb out of the cellar with an improving but still unimpressive 45.7%.
Personnel wise, of course the Heat have three top notch players in Lebron, Wade and Bosh. Guys like Haslem and Chalmers are making steady contributions, as are newcomers like point guard Norris Cole and veteran swing man Shane Battier. The big question is the health of Dwyane Wade, who is dealing with several leg injuries. Will he play? If so, will he be effective? (As of this writing, it looks like he will sit, with Jones or Battier starting instead.)
Miami likes to score in the painted area, and the Spurs' interior defense will need to be solid to come away with a win, whether Wade is healthy or not. LeBron James is averaging nearly thirty points a game, and an incredible 58% from the field, ten points above his career average. Expect Pop to throw the kitchen sink at Lebron to try to make him work for every shot, with heavy doses of Kawhi, some Jefferson, maybe some Blair. But Bosh is another tough threat in the paint, good for twenty points on any given night. If the Heat is without Wade, that will make them a little easier to handle, but they are still a handful.
Our boys are having their own injury issues, as I'm sure you know. LWM is turning into Life Without A Lot of Guys. Our best player out for another month at least, our backup point and bench sparkplug out for perhaps as long, and now even our would-be backup backup point has a contusion. It's spreading!
Fortunately, we have a backup for our backup backup. Cory Joseph may not be ready, but he is playing, and so far I think he is handling things pretty darn well. We need to give Parker some rest here and there, and although Joseph does not bring the scoring threat of the Wee Frenchman, he does bring some pestering defense and a good eye for the open man. Joseph is just one of our intriguing newer guys that I am having a lot of fun watching this season, and hope to see more of tonight. I am really starting to appreciate all the little things that Danny Green is doing on the court. Whatever basketball IQ is, Green has it in spades. And I am smitten with Kawhi Leonard. The kid can defend like nobody's business, and he is a rebounding fiend, and is scoring in double figures despite shooting being his weak suit. And we are only thirteen games in. How good are these guys going to be once they figure out what they are doing?
My happiness does not stop with appreciating the young pups. I am also really excited about the growing contributions of three guys that were much maligned last season: Tiago, Blair, and Jefferson. Blair has been a solid guy this season, with what I think is an improved defensive effort, chipping in points and passing the ball well on offense, and just a cooler head. For Jefferson, the Jamnesty continues. His points are a little down the last couple of games, but he is shooting with confidence, and in big moments. And Tiago Splitter is playing great defense, while finally showing some lovely offense. The last few games we have seen some incredible post moves and sweet finishes from Sparkles, and he is even making free throws. The surprises just keep coming!
Oh, and Tony and Tim. Ho hum.
Gary, Manu, and TJ, get well soon. Listen to your doctors. We need you back, but right now your teammates are keeping things together. Is it too much to ask for the Spurs to finally get a road win in Miami tonight? I don't know. If we shoot from the three point line a bit better than the other night in San Antonio, if Parker can do to Miami what Ty Lawson did to them a few nights ago, if Leonard can make life miserable for Lebron James, and if Duncan can give us another vintage performance? I wouldn't be surprised.

NBA Stats Cube Lineup Comparison Here. Heat perspective can be found here: Peninsula is Mightier.
As always Tony must dominate Fisher, and NBA league pass is recommended for those who are willing to pony up the cash. Almost every Spurs game will be broadcast there, which is especially helpful for those of us who aren't in the San Antonio area. Please don't post links to illegal game feeds in the game thread. Links to illegal feeds are not permitted on SBNation, but you can probably find them out there on the internets if you're resourceful and desperate.

Free &erson! Hopefully Pop plays him tonight!
TDzilla! - January 17, 2012
Given that playing Anderson would suggest that Pop is not “HOE’N” Anderson, I feel it’s an impossibility.
Fred Silva - January 17, 2012
With Neal (likely) out, he has a chance to make some impact.
grego21 - January 17, 2012
Doh, read below, Greg!

I’d rather play Danny Green 30 minutes.
Fred Silva - January 17, 2012
I think Green will get a lot of time, but I think it is worth giving Anderson time, still, especially without any practice. I’m sure you’d prefer small ball with Leonard/Green/RJ/Anderson over anything that included Bonner (and/or maybe Blair).
grego21 - January 17, 2012
Nice. If I argue for Bonner’s minutes I’d be going against everything I stand for and believe in. Fine, Anderson can have 5 minutes.
Fred Silva - January 17, 2012
I know how to argue this one! :P
grego21 - January 17, 2012
Neal isn’t playing too? oh no…

TDzilla! - January 17, 2012
Blows for Thomas, who’d likely see minutes, with Bonner out, at least in garbage time (or blow out time).
grego21 - January 17, 2012
Kawhi on LeBron. Can’t wait.
indiancharlie - January 17, 2012

SleepCrack - January 17, 2012
That’s the matchup I’ve been waiting for!

Holy Crap, Spurs by 10
Galfusica - January 17, 2012
The two games between these teams last season both resulted to a lopsided win for the home team. I think we’ll have a close one tonight. Spurs by 2!
Ayatollah - January 17, 2012
Not having Wade or Manu will make it interesting.
grego21 - January 17, 2012
This is the 2nd test against a top contender Team(okc being the first) lets hope out boys step up the the challenge and compete.

If the Spurs can hold this team under 103 points per 100 possessions, and do the same to the #1 offense in the league tomorrow night, I will feel much better about their prospects this season, regardless of who wins these two games.
Tim C. - January 17, 2012
Great preview! Let’s rock tonight.

Ed (dfjmed) - January 17, 2012
Sounds like Blair is dialed in!
Jordan Leithart - January 17, 2012
I think there needs to be a Twitter for Dejuan that just sums up all of his tweets. I think it would be successful.
grego21 - January 17, 2012
He is unique, that’s for sure.
quincyscott - January 17, 2012 via mobile
I wonder if he has a facebook or something like that for his closer friends. His comments there, have got to be gold. Although, perhaps, I am wrong, judging by his Twitter.

Too bad Curry is out.
SpursfanSteve - January 17, 2012
Difference maker! It’s over now. Miami stands no chance. I almost feel sorry for them.
grego21 - January 17, 2012
I love how we know how The King has a cold on the day of a big game.
Ed (dfjmed) - January 17, 2012
His right nostril is all clogged up, so he’ll be shooting free throws with his left one.
SleepCrack - January 17, 2012 via mobile
miami, i forget they even had a team, they aint nothing to behold
polartownjunkie - January 17, 2012
I think I’ve given up being surprised this season.
Can’t wait to see what Danny Ocean and crew come up with tonight.
SpursColoredGlasses - January 17, 2012 via mobile
Danny Ocean?
WaveOcean - January 17, 2012
Ocean’s 11 reference (George Clooney’s character in the film).
grego21 - January 17, 2012
thank you
WaveOcean - January 17, 2012
Yep. It seemed to fit.
SpursColoredGlasses - January 17, 2012 via mobile
not happy with Joseph’s play but he is a rookie and is too weak right now. i am glad he is getting some experience though…
Joe deLarios - January 17, 2012
Well, he’s going to get better, only with time. I’d prefer he be in Austin, but at least, this will give him a leg up in real time. Pop is now forced to teach him and focus on him, since he has to. No way around it in this season.
grego21 - January 17, 2012
exactly
Joe deLarios - January 17, 2012
Great preview Q.
This game could be a chance for Anderson and Joseph to get some minutes. Anderson could be matched up with James Jones, who won’t abuse him on defense and Joseph could go against another rookie in Norris Cole. I think the Spurs have a better chance of winning tomorrow’s game, so I wouldn’t mind a little rest for Tony and the wings.
Edg5 - January 17, 2012
I am waiting for Anderson to break out. So much potential.
quincyscott - January 17, 2012 via mobile
He’s one of the biggest victims of the lack of practices, it seems.
grego21 - January 17, 2012
I sense an “L” here. Gonna be impressed if the Spurs can beat a motivated Heat squad. (Even if they are Wadeless)
alamobro - January 17, 2012
Banned :)
Heman - January 17, 2012
(Banned) ^2
grego21 - January 17, 2012
Well, I am only taking into consideration that they will be extremely motivated after losing 3 straight, they are at home, they have had 3 days off, and we suck on the road, big time.
alamobro - January 17, 2012
I feel much better about this game than I do tomorrow night’s game in Orlando. Wouldn’t be surprised if Pop goes all-in tonight, and rests Tim tomorrow.
Tim C. - January 17, 2012
This sounds very reasonable Tim.
indiancharlie - January 17, 2012
I wish Malcolm and Neal weren’t possibly out of this game. But it does make more sense since they are out, to throw everything at this game. We’ll know with how the first rotations begin.
grego21 - January 17, 2012
Malcom and Neal are not out of this game….Right?
Heman - January 17, 2012
Malcolm is recovering from stomach flu. So his chances are higher. Neal has a quad bruise that they’ll likely play safe with.
grego21 - January 17, 2012
Like last years first matchup? With Wade?[and Manu :’( ]
Spurs Yoda - January 17, 2012 via mobile
Even withouth Wade this is a great game to measure our Spurs. In particular, I want to see Tiago defending Bosh and if Kawhi can at least slow down a bit Lebron. Also, considering rookie Norris Cole is a sparkplug and they are missing wade, I would like to see Danny Green and/or Cory Jospeh showing their defensive apttitude.
I dont see Richard Jefferson having much of an impact, this is a horrible matchup for him in my opinion. I hope im wrong.
Chilai - January 17, 2012
Without Wade, and Leonard seeing Lebron, this matchup might actually work decent for RJ. I think he’s due to get out of his 3pt slump, especially with a day off after their 6 games in 8 nights.
grego21 - January 17, 2012
RJ should attack the basket, he’s not even trying this season. But still like his energy, especially on the boards.
spursfan87 - January 17, 2012
I wouldn’t say that is true completely. He’s attacked the boards at times. A good example is the strong rebound he pulled to give Aldridge his 5th foul.
Depending on the lineup, if he’s with Leonard, usually Kawhi is the guy hitting the boards.
grego21 - January 17, 2012
I meant to say that I like the way he’s rebounding the ball, but on offense he is just a jump shooter. I would like to see him drive more to the basket, try to go to the free throw line.
spursfan87 - January 17, 2012
I honestly, don’t think he’s ever going to be one to drive as often. I almost feel like the team discouraged him from doing that, especially since he has been generally aggressive.
grego21 - January 17, 2012
Nice preview Q. It seems like the Spurs will have a chance to win this game if they don’t fall in love with the 3 ball. Last year, they did and one game it fell and in the other it did not. This should be a great test for our young guys.
Big50 - January 17, 2012
Lets win #1 on the road tonight
spursfan87 - January 17, 2012
Ed (dfjmed) - January 17, 2012
Interesting. I think Durant gets it if they continue to hold up this record.
grego21 - January 17, 2012
I guess the Knicks and Heat are the teams to beat?
Big50 - January 17, 2012
Knicks? I needed that laugh today.
Spurs Yoda - January 17, 2012
Pretty sweet that Pop is so highly regarded in the coaching categories, though.
Ed (dfjmed) - January 17, 2012
Indy is a much much much better choice than the Knicks. Or even Philly. As much as I joke, since the schedule is pretty crazy, it’ll benefit these old teams over a team like Boston. Chicago still should be up there just because a lot of the East sucks.
grego21 - January 17, 2012
Philly. i agree
Spurs Yoda - January 17, 2012
The Spurs are going to paint Miami GREEN tonight. Can’t wait. Lebron who?
Heman - January 17, 2012
When you look at the dark side, careful you must be … for the dark side looks back.
