Game Preview: San Antonio Spurs vs. Portland Trail Blazers

San Antonio Spurs vs Portland Trail Blazers

AT&T Center
January 13, 2012 7:30 PM Spurs Time
TV: FOX SW - RADIO: WOAI

Well that last game was a wild one, wasn't it? I'm glad to have beat Houston. It also means that we're still perfect at home (if anyone is counting). It was easy to see that Pop knew that win was important. I don't think I've seen Duncan or Parker play that many minutes in a couple seasons. While it's been a huge blessing to have players like the Late George Hill and the recent Green/Leonard combo to rely on when they're hot, when a team is going through adversity it relies on its veterans to lead the way. It's the reason you don't often see young teams win championships, and a good reason that, as Spurs fans, we feel a sense of pride when the media declares us old.

At the moment I'm leaving Poor Mr. Anderson off the key bench players. He seems to be in a funk, which he needs to get out of as soon as possible. This is one of his major chances to show what he can do during LWM, but so far he's been relegated to bench duty. I love how Tiago has been playing, I just wish we encouraged his game a little more. Why wouldn't we throw a couple 4-downs toward him when Timmy is having a rest? At the moment, I feel like Tiago could be an excellent player, perhaps an all-star later in his career, but he's so inexperienced with the way the NBA plays, he looks a little lost still. Hopefully, Green finds his shot tonight as well.

As for Portland, all their starters play over 30 minutes a game, with the exception of Camby. When he goes out, it looks like Batum subs in, which will force us to play small ball against Aldridge. The previous sentence is what has consistently given the Spurs problems whenever they play Portland. My biggest concern is the defense of our second string. This being the front end of a SEGABABA for both teams, I can see Pop resting Duncan more (though who knows the inner workings of the great Popovich). However, I don't see Portland resting their players. This will force us to play either Splitter on Aldridge for 10+ minutes (acceptable) or Bonner against him (unacceptable).

One of the biggest reasons we've had such trouble with Portland in years past was because of a certain point guard named Andre Miller. He was one of the few guards who was always able to guard Parker. Without him, I can see Parker having a big game, hopefully we can offset Aldridge enough to improve to 8-0 at home, but it's going to be a tight one. If Crawford goes off though, I can see this being a long night for the Spurs.

As always Tony needs to dominate Fisher, and NBA league pass is recommended for those who are willing to pony up the cash. Almost every Spurs game will be broadcast there, which is especially helpful for those of us who aren't in the San Antonio area. Please don't post links to illegal game feeds in the game thread. Links to illegal feeds are not permitted on SBNation, but you can probably find them out there on the internets if you're resourceful and desperate.

I believe that the point guard for Portland is Felton...not Fisher.
just read the reference...cute. Fisher, Felton...really both point guards in the NBA so what's the

difference right?
I am sure Fisher will do just fine against Westbrook tonight.

We really should make it a little more obvious that that’s a link. Nice of you to stop by and chat though!

^ looks like we have a noob here. Welcome fellow spurs fan

Nope. He’s a Blazers fan. Welcome anyway!

she is a Blazer fan...I like the Spurs though...great team. Smart

very smart coach…

Good to hear. Y’all have a good coach too.
Hope the Trail Blazers continue to have a good season.

Btw great write up JL. Thought your “4-downs” term pertaining Tiago was hilarious

I know JA’s in a funk but I wish he could have had say 4 starts(at the start of LWM) no questions asked, he looks like he’s afraid of making mistakes cause he’ll get yanked. I also prefer Neal as first G off the bench. Would also love to see some 4-downs run for Tiago (he did have a decent offensive game in Euroleague)

Btw great write up….as always

Well, it’s like Neal got the best of him again so to speak. That kind of sucked.

To be honest, I really don’t think that high of JA. I wish I felt differently. May be a stint with Toros might help.

A lot screams confidence since he started the preseason well and looked good.

So, if Pop goes with the same starters as last time, who does Kawhi guard first? Matthews, Felton, Wallace?

I think Matthews. He’s the Blazers most prolific guard.

I think he will want Kwahi on Crawford. So he might sic Green on the poing guard in the game early depending on when Crawford gets subbed in.

But I doubt he gets back on the bench, so he’ll likely start with Wes Matthews or Wallace. The nice thing about both him and RJ are they can interchange pretty easily.

we be rolling again tonight, no worries

Our bigs and Tony need to show up again. Buckle up! We are in for a ride tonight.

Of all the elite teams, I think we matchup with these guys the best. The only way this team is scary for the Spurs is if Lamarcus spends 85% of his time in the paint posting up. But he won’t. He’ll pull his David West act and let us off the hook.

Actually, I feel like good jumpshooting bigs always seem to kill us, but I hope you’re right.

Agreed. Unless Leonard maybe can take a stab at him.

They do, but it’s the lesser of two evils. Lower percentage shots, fewer free throws. Big teams give us more problems. Like Memphis or LA. I don’t mind a skinny Camby and an outside shooting PF.

The problem, is Aldridge’s shooting is one of his best strengths.

He would kill Tim on the low block. He’s too quick. Watch, he’ll post up 2 or 3 times on Tim and destroy him, but those will be the only times he posts up all game, thank god.

I’d be willing to bet money that Tim Duncan will not get “destroyed” on the block.

But…Blair?

Obvious is obvious?

Have you seen Tim try to move laterally this decade? It’s not 2003 anymore.

I’m not saying it is 2003 or that he’s the same level of player, but the man simply doesn’t get “destroyed”.

More to the point, two bigs that have offensive game hurt us, since we inevitably have Blair or Bonner in there to take adavantage of.

Depends how long they are in and who they are matched up against. Blair only played like 16 minutes against the Rockets which was the lowest of all rotation players.

But Spurs have Tiago, so that’s good. Maybe Blair will get in foul trouble so that Malcolm in the Middle can play.

Yup, Malcom seems to be built to play those David West types. Long reach to bother the jumper and quick enough to stay in front.

As long as SOMEBODY bothers him. Aldridge David Wested us to the tune of 40 points in one game last year. This is going to be a tough game.

He’s been shooting 46.3% on the road so far this season. Given that nobody can miss a contested jumper against us, by my math, that means he’ll shoot 75% tonight. Y’all are right. We’re screwed.

Aww, I didn’t mean it like that. What I meant to say was that this will be a tough WIN.

As long as Aldridge stays outside, I can see Kawhi-Five-O sticking with him. However, I agree with Fred that if Aldridge posts up, he could destroy the Spurs.

Kawhi-Five-O

I like that.

It comes courtesy of Doc Rostov. It’s a keeper.

Actually, I think although Aldridge will score decent if he posts, it’ll be tougher to get it as consistent compared to his jump shot, just because Duncan is long enough to be bothersome.

Adridge has always shot well against the Spurs because he’s really good at those 18 foot jumpers. In previous years, those were the jumpers that our defense conceded and so he would be consistently left open. It’s why David West, Chris Bosh, Dirk Nowitzki and LaMarcus have always done well against us.

I think we conceded them due to our personnel. Once our bigs get sucked into the paint, they are too slow to recover. I hope Malcom in the middle gets a few minutes. I want to see how quick/coordinated he is. He has the body type that can help with those shooting PFs.

Really, really, really want a Spurs W for my birthday…GSG!!!!!

Happy birthday. Have a blast

Hey! Merry Birthday! It’s my birthday as well. Hopefully triple the luck (as it’s my sister’s birthday too).

Thanks, y’all:) Happy b’day, Big50!

Happy Day Big & cat. Good things do happen on the 13th.

Happy birthday both of y’all, and also to anyone else whose birthday it may be. Who’s birthday it is. Who is having a birthday today?

In whose camper they were wh…ahh, never mind. Happy Birthday EVERYBODY!

I think Leonard is going to start again. He as good a job as he could. I don’t see how Neal earned it back. That and Neal is backup PG with CJ as the 3rd stringer.

I wouldn’t mind seeing Green on Crawford

I’ll bet we see some of that.

Nice work Jordan. I think this is an important game against a solid opponent. I would point out that this is not the first game of a SEGABABA for the Spurs. They play Sunday against the Suns.

Ah! You’re right. I got my dates confused when I looked at ESPN’s schedule. Though, let’s just blame it on ESPN

I’m all for blaming ESPN.

Love the passion for the team on here! As a Blazers fan, I want to raise the official first beer for a good game tonight.

The beer will be a true northwest IPA of course. Here here!

Just had IPA for the first time a couple weeks ago courtesy of a friend who discovered it in North Carolina. The first one’s always a little skunky, but after that, who cares? Here’s to a great game, and thanks for visiting!

IPAs are the Manu Ginobili of beers

Texas does need better beers.

IPAs have never made me look like a 97 year old cripple when I try to guard one.

you must not have had the right IPA, or the right people fighting for it

Trade you Cali alcohol for Texas BBQ

Cali beers arent that great

New England, Northwest, two of my least favorite regions, but apparently hipsters and preps can produce great beers. However, I think we can compromise, travel has made amazing breakthroughs

There’s some good little places up in Nor Cal and then San Diego has a lot of good small places. Definitely, from the LA area, it can get meh.

I’m not saying CA is the best place to go, but it ha some good small places, here and there.

I can’t stand most IPAs :(

As someone who appreciates all that CO microbrews have to offer, I couldn’t agree more.

I want to see Malcolm in the Middle!
